I've just had an electrician replace our consumer unit and all he wanted behind it was a piece of 18mm ply.
Should I be concerned?

Re: fence posts, wood or concreat?
I've never worked with concrete posts so cant compare but have started treating my own post on the farm with creosote now we can buy it again. It is nasty stuff but IME it works very well at preserving post as any old telegraph pole will demonstrate. If you are soaking your own post get the wood as ...

Re: Renovating an old farmhouse
Time for a little update. The architect walked away when he heard how low our budget to renovate was so we are just going to muddle through on our own. First the big news is we have a working heating system for the first time ever :) . An ASHP in conjunction with rads. This I did not do myself and l...

Re: underfloor heating under floorboards - any ideas on the numbers?
Hi Knighty We have underfloor throughout from a GSHP. Upstairs we have a pug UFH with boards and its tiled on a screed downstairs. I dont have any numbers but it's a very noticeable difference. Also just a bit of carpet makes a fair difference. Having just had an ASHP with rads installed in another ...

Re: Renovating an old farmhouse
I Coverig these type of walls with plastic (e.g. polyurethane insulation boards could make things fine in the short term but lead to bigger problems long term. I believe there was some discussions about this sort of thing on the old forum which is once again accessable - might be worth reading up a...

Re: Renovating an old farmhouse
Oh wow lots of chat on this I am no good at multiple quotes but a few answers. Also I'm dyslexic so I will apologise in advance for poor spelling and punctuation. The water table is basically ground level for months on end in a winter like this last one. I installed French drains outside on 3 sides ...

Re: Renovating an old farmhouse
We had to have Block and Beam floor and air vents all around or a sump with a fan to keep the council happy, and we're we're well clear of the granite. We had to install a radon sump in the barn not that anyone then tested to see if we needed to use it. I don't think we are doing any work where BC ...

Re: Renovating an old farmhouse
Hi from 3 miles north of the moor. Have you room for a Ground Source pump especially if you're over granite, it will be a consistent heat input and may even be higher than air temp most of the year? Afterthought: We have a neighbour who recently built a bungalow on Dad's farm and he went Ground Sou...

Renovating an old farmhouse
Hi all. Back in the day on the other place I shared our conversion of an old barn into our home. It's been great but circumstances have changed and it looks like we will be moving into the main farmhouse. I have made improvements to it over the years to help keep my dad warm but it's still in quite ...

Re: Plug in energy timer
You could consider those wifi-enabled "smart plugs" that you can get in many places - all controlled by an App on your phone - plug the device you want to control into a smart plug and then set the schedule on the App? I think some even work with Alexa/Siri/Google voice control I will loo...
