Re: Dealing with excess solar:

[I think many electrical items can now vary amps, to manage watts now, but I may be making this up. Would love to know more.] Yes, anything with an electronic power supply (including probably LED light bulbs) will achieve a constant output voltage on the load side and hence constant power demand. S...

Re: Dealing with excess solar:

I had the DNO out to look at the high voltage, which was, of course, lower than limit at 251V at the time. I did mention that as I had DNO authorisation to export 3.8kW, that they should make sure I was able to do that - but he didn't seem impressed and mentioned that it was my inverters 'fault' th...

Re: Dealing with excess solar:

I have this problem with my extra Hoymiles PV - where the voltage goes above 253 during exporting and it trips out. ... It still tripped out most days over the past couple of weeks - but in most cases not for too long. It's frustrating I too am quite close to the limit. Fortunately I reused an old ...

Re: Dealing with excess solar:

Also, for a DC side battery, especially with the massive Wp overcapacity that Solaredge inverters can handle (up to 200% of rating), then it may be wise to prevent the battery filling before peak generation, so that the inverter output + battery diversion, doesn't fall short of generation. PS - My ...

Re: Dealing with excess solar:

There is a related issue whereby with a lot of generation it can be better to charge the battery at half the rate for twice as long so you are not trying to export above your limit as soon as the battery is full. This is potentially an attractive thing to do as I don't think my DNO will agree to me ...

Re: What pv kw / battery storage ?

I don't expect to import anything from April to September unless I need to recharge the car in a hurry. In winter we can mostly survive on E7 night rate alone. The extra 3.2kW of panels has made a big difference, they were intended mainly to help with the 12kW(t) heat pump but that has not yet been ...

Re: Were getting closer to the battery solution (Now completed)

I would guess the overall design, whether its perc with better efficiency and performance, the cell placement, I guess they are all factors, I'm sure somebody will come along and enlighten us. It may well be a case of you get what you pay for, there is no doubt the LONGi panels were cheap, I think ...

Re: AI helping to prevent power cuts

Had a power cut today and had no idea until UK Power called me up with an automated message and text to say there was a failure affecting us... I had no idea - well thats not quite true, I saw the briefest flicker of lights then disregarded it. Yes, the Victron switchover is pretty seamless, less n...

Re: AI helping to prevent power cuts

Some of this is common sense stuff being re-branded as AI. And what passes for the US grid is notorious for being fragmented and badly managed. "Everybody gets up and makes a cup of tea at halftime," Mr McCormick says. I remember this was the justification used when Dinowig came on line in...
