Re: underfloor heating under floorboards - any ideas on the numbers?

I thought the consensus was that air source us great untill you hit negative temperatures and then it's pretty rubbish? Yes, ASHP performance deteriorates at low air temperatures. However, as a general rule you don't get low temps for all that much of the heating season. For instance, it's freezing...

Re: Are people really so dim?

While it was a pretty rubbish article, it's more than a little unreasonable to accuse people of being dim. Energy saving is a wide ranging subject with multiple areas, all of which involve varying degrees of technicality combined with political and bureaucratic complexities. Add in various actors wi...

Re: ASHP & triple glazing

On the opposite side so to speak our 40kWh battery stack won't be exporting much to the grid in Wintertime as its going to be needed to run the ASHP. If it does modulate down to 25% of its capacity that's 1.75kW of power demand of which I can expect 500W from the PV even in Winter generation condit...

Re: ASHP & triple glazing

Reading this today sent me back to the heat pump monitoring pages to have another look and its surprising to see how flexible some of the set points are. As an example we were advised that running a heat pump low and slow is the best way to get the optimum performance, but on the monitor pages you ...

Re: Stop pushing heat pumps or face major backlash, Dale Vince tells Labour

That video was using 22mm distribution pipes under the floor boards - thats not small bore. The radiators were fed with micro bore pipes. It's a common arrangement. Obviously if the system has a manifold and 10s of metres of microbore feeding each radiator then it isn't going to work well, but it p...

Re: Stop pushing heat pumps or face major backlash, Dale Vince tells Labour

I have a few issues with HPs. I would fit 1or 2 A2A HP but my wife will have non of it, citing the draught and looks of the indoor unit I would fit a A2W system but my house is small bore I dont agree with the MCS that the whole house should be heated to 21C ? on the coldest day of the yr. This mak...

Re: Stop pushing heat pumps or face major backlash, Dale Vince tells Labour

I doubt that many people confuse cost with CO2 emissions, but for all but the very wealthy and/or committed you can't avoid the cost issue. Very few people are going to pay the £3000-£5000 you can expect to pay for an MCS installation just to replace a gas boiler with similar or higher running costs...

Re: Stop pushing heat pumps or face major backlash, Dale Vince tells Labour

I get that HML with a large modest insulted bungalow is getting good CoPs but even then thats good CoPs to maintain the energy input to the bungalow based on average insulation (BTW is 20kWh per year right HML or are you missing one or two digits ?) wouldnt it be better if the government gave him o...

Re: BEV charger questions

The round trip efficiency of batteries is only about 80-90% so you lose a lot by going through a battery system.

Very few people will have a battery system with the capacity to charge an EV.

Re: Stop pushing heat pumps or face major backlash, Dale Vince tells Labour

I like ASHP but even I am looking at them with the view of is it the right answer for me ? Considering our heating season generally runs from October/November to February/ March ie 4 to 6 months does a 5 to 8kW ASHP that only runs to produce DHW for 6 to 8 months a year have a chance of delivering ...
