Re: Octopus launches its own Heat Pump

I think for true mass adoption, a lot of UK housing likely to be not suitable. Reality for ASHP is they work best in super insulated houses with under floor heating, the vast majority of UK houses simply wont have this. I am sure many can be made better, additional insulation and possibly ground fl...

Re: How do I.. remove this drain cover!?

Is it a pressed steel thing filled with screed and then tiled? I remember some of those rectangular screw downs have screws that come out some way and then you lift them with a bar under the screws themselves. Mind you they are bloody heavy when screeded and tiled, and with a bit of rust you will be...

Re: How do I.. remove this drain cover!?

Is it just a screw down or are there lifting eyes in it?? If it is as stuck as you say you are probably best off battering the shit out of it with a sledghammer, rip it up and replace lid and frame with something that has a proper system for lifting in the future. I have spent many an hour trying to...

Re: Buried, uk waste, & the mafia link.. BBCr4

Not only expensive but also quite complicated to dispose of too. Lots of companies are quite picky about what they will take but with very little consistancy, some will take engine oil for instance but not old tyres, some take electricals, some wont, and god help you if you try to dispose of plaster...

Re: ifePO4 batteries in outside shed.

TBH, I don't know enough about the risks of various components failure to offer an opinion. I am told the fire risk of this battery chemistry is low, also my stack of pylons and all its wiring is mounted as best I can against fire proof surfaces, a smoke alarm is fitted just above and two pretty bee...

Re: ifePO4 batteries in outside shed.

I would put them inside if at all possible, insulation will slow down the heatloss a bit, but you will need to supply some heat to keep them warm-ish.
They are a big investment that needs looking after IMHO

I'd bet more than a few quid you're right, I was giving it the benefit of the doubt. Having said that I would still support some ongoing research.

Re: Impact of CCS

I guess the best that be said at present is it is still an immature technology that might see a breakthrough. Looking at our progress so far we are almost certainly going to need some kind of geo-engineering to keep the temperature stable.

Re: Impact of London's ULEZ expansion on air quality

It is both PM2.5s and NOx levels that count, for instance our car is way cleaner than the limit for PM2.5s but above the limit for NOx so it wont be compliant.

ho hum......

Re: Solar thermal for hot tub

I think the unanimous opinion is that PV and a diverter beats ST these days. There are also some intrinsic problems with ST. Eg: if the water boils it can be dramatic, all liquids leak eventually, all moving parts (pumps) fail. However if you really want to mess around with ST I don't imagine it'd ...
