Re: Brand new MG5 for under 20k

I've had a few issues with my mg5 but about 3000 of it's 40k miles have been done on dirt roads which probably doesn't help and it cost about £20k which was a lot cheaper than any other new EV at the time. The charge door is flimsy plastic which no longer closes. (MG are going to fix that today...) ...

Re: HVDC Interconnectors

We can confirm preliminary work is already underway as being up at Inverness last week there were several teams of geothermal guys lodging in the Halls of residence along with ourselves and sharing kitchen facilities. I think they were a little surprised when I quizzed them about what they were eng...

Re: Planning submitted for new pumped hydro scheme

I haven't engaged with anyone from the Loch Kemp proposal so am just guessing but have wondered if one of the attractions of the site is that it is only a couple of km from Corriegarth windfarm and so they could have their own direct connection between wind farm and psh and bypass the grid charges.

Re: Planning submitted for new pumped hydro scheme

There is another one at Loch Kemp, just a few km from Loch Cathrach. And initial talk of one on the other side of loch Ness at Glen Eearach. Some of these are speculative attempts to get permission so they can try to sell the project on (this appears to be ILIs business model) and so don't expect th...

Re: Fully electric container ship

Regen from slowing a vessel sounds difficult, progress with these things is made incrementally and easier things will be done first I guess. Coincidentally this morning the vessel I work on was testing a flywheel / battery system that regenerates from cranes / hoists as they lower loads. It should a...

Re: Fully electric container ship

I'd expect a ship like that to have at least 5 MW engines so, although it's a huge battery, it is still pretty tiny by ships fuel standards!

Re: High density hydro

Yes, using very fine solids suspended in a carrier fluid is fairly cheap way to get a dense fluid.

It is possible to get true (solids free) fluids up to about 2.3sg (eg Cesium formate brine) but it is eye wateringly expensive (even for the oil industry).

Re: High density hydro

If they are using clay it will be as a carrier for another weighting agent. In the world of drilling fluids this would be barite which would be capable of being mixed at somewhere between 2 and 2.5sg. (Hematite is occasionally used to get slightly higher densities). Water is a nasty thing though - i...

*some* farmers warn of zero harvest!
The last 18 months have been pretty much bang on average rainfall for us.

Drilling Rig Power System

I can't believe I've been working on a drilling rig for 18 months and only yesterday heard that we are about to install an NOV 'Powerblade" system. In summary, one of our big power draws is the draw works - effectively a crane for pulling the drill string in and out of hole which goes up and do...
