No membrane used, remains pretty dry under there year round although a few drips. I would likely black silicone the panel gaps if I wanted full weatherproof.
My pergola was not built as a PV array carrier. It was built as a hot tub area. It's 8" posts in the round driven about 2 foot into the ground and belled at bottom before concreting in place. Main structural members holding those posts together are 4" square. The pv carrying timbers are 4" x 2". M10 coachbolts and No 5 screws to hold it all together and a good rail system to screw thru into the 4"x2" timbers.
