Grounding.

#1

Post by NoraBatty »

Am I right in thinking grounding solar arrays is not compulsory in the UK?!

Im currently designing a new shed and solar array for the gable wall. Im making a consumables list tonight and just realised that i dont think my roof array is grounded.
I will look tomorrow to check, but im fairly certain it isnt.
I was planning on grounding whatever i did as standard.

How many of you who have added arrays have done so?
How many havent bothered, and why?!

Not compulsory.

Down to the designer on the cabling method, existing supply such as PME
Proximity to other services, type of inverter used, double insulated cabling/cabling route etc.

Neither of the contractors who fitted my two arrays in 2011 and 2023 mentioned the topic. I assumed (!) they knew what they were doing. The first panels are probably floating bc the Steca inverters use HF transformers which IIRC provide galvanic isolation.

The second array is connected to a DC charge controller so is connected to the battery ground which is bonded to the MET.

The frames of the arrays are not grounded. I am not planning on going up on the roof so am not much bothered. I am more worried about the high-current high-voltage DC cables in the loft which are loose laid and not mechanically protected, as they could be lethal.
