Thanks for this User Manual. . . . . Now I know that I must be very careful about [NOT] pressing that button unless I know how to get it back to "Exported Energy" value.

As this is the CT model. I confirm there is a CT clamp on the Grid-side LIVE cable, with a lead that disappears into the same metal box as this SDM120CT meter.

Is it not there to stop the power going back into the grid when your not using power in the house and to put the power into the batteries.
What type of inverter have you got. ?

Is the current transformer / meter there only to send RS232 information to the Solis inverter on mains current import. ?
What the meter is displaying. ?
Is it reading power available to charge the batteries. ?
Why the current transformer rated at 5 amps when it is used on a 4 K.w. system.
Why does the Solis inverter not have its own designed current transformer to carry out these functions. ?

I assume you have a Solis Hybrid inverter. If so that meter is supplied with the Solis hybrid inverter and is used for export control by the inverter. It is connected back to the inverter via RS485 (well it is on my RHI inverter).

On the inverter you can set an export limit (G100 export limitation if required), or it is used to make sure your batteries only supply the house load and do not discharge to the grid unless you want them to. i.e. keep export/import at zero.

The other meter is a simple "Total Generation Meter" which if it is a hybrid meter and batteries sometimes get "topped up" from the grid on a cheap tariff is a bit meaningless as it will also record battery discharge power.

Yes - a Solis hybrid Inverter & mini-meter was supplied with the Solis.
Yes it is showing the Total kWhs EXPORTED - in this display mode.
Yes, it's connected directly to the Inverter in the loft.

. . . . sounds like my original guess i.e. Solar PV generation + whatever is being imported from the Grid . . .. ( to-date negligible import ) !

The button only changes what is being displayed, it doesn't affect the data sent to the inverter. Pressing the button just scrolls through import, export, total power as well as grid voltage, current and frequency.
