Its the standard to which battery inverters and systems with export limitation should be certificated to. Its in addition to G98 and G99 inverter systems.

Its a heavy document, but some specific rules are,
  • Communications need to be hardwired and not wireless.
  • System needs to be failsafe so if loss of any system component, eg, comms or sensors the system shuts down or goes into a fallback mode where export is guaranteed to be less than the agreed limit usually being 3.68kW of export.
  • System needs to respond within 5 seconds to out of spec situations.

This is SMA's explanation of how it can be used in its usage in its systems although it was written in 2019 so it quotes G83 and G59 which have been since replaced with G98 and G99.

Most manufacturers have G100 certificates for their latest offerings.

Haven't we had this conversation before ?

A lot of folk put DIY battery systems in like the Sofar ME3000SP with Pylontech batteries. Its easy to do by most electrically competent people, officially you need a Part P sparky to connect up the AC side.

But if you already have a PV system which most folk do, officially its a G99 pre-install application to the DNO as both inverters added together exceed 3.68kW output irrespective of whether its a G100 system or not. The DNOs have realised this so have created a Fast Track light touch process for adding a battery inverter to an existing G83 or G98 PV system. But there are some caveats,
  • Its still a pre-install application but faster.
  • The total inverter power cannot exceed 7.36kW (i.e. 2 x 3.68kW) and each individual inverter cannot exceed 3.68kW, in other words each must be G98 compliant on their own. Note - If the older solar PV system is G83 and DNO already knows about it, that's OK.
  • Battery inverter must be G100 certificated.
  • Need to supply simple diagram and explanation of how the system works to show its compliant to G100 export limitation.

Alternatives are installing a second Off Grid system (like Tinbum) or adding PV via charge controllers to an existing official battery system (like joeboy or stinsy). You can also add PV to an existing solar inverter up to its limitations, but if its a FIT system, you cannot without complex discussions with FIT provider.

I presume if you are looking at a bigger inverter it is allowed but it can’t be fast tracked?

I’ve always wondered. Is it the homeowners responsibility to approach the DNO or the installers? I got my fuse updated recently and my car charger hadn’t been registered when I got it installed in 2017.

Yes, I think the absolute limit is up to 17kW of inverters on a single phase and it would be a standard G99 application which may require testing, witnessing, more cost, longer time scales, etc.

Car chargers and Heat Pumps are other things which are supposed to be registered with the DNO too.

Good question. The way I look at it, the homeowner is the one who holds the connection agreement (for domestic premises, via the "National Terms of Connection", which is part of the energy suppliers T&C's in most case ) and this sets out the requirements to inform the DNO of any relevant changes.

So the homeowner is responsible for making sure these requirements are met (applying for consent pre-install, or informing post-install), although in most cases the installer will offer to do that on the homeowners behalf.

Whether that is the most effective way to ensure the regs are followed - different question!

Back home from Turkey, bumped off flight so had to hotel and go for next evening flight to Scotland. No Edinburgh flight available so landed in Glasgow and then taxi to Edinburgh at 03.00hrs this morn (smashing)! Good chat with driver about COP Glasgow kicking off on Monday. Anyway, new unit now in, updated and operating with no fuss. Had to move Solar DC isolation switch to make space (MUCH larger unit) and a couple of new cables. Will tidy all cables later. Wanted to get prior unit on its way to new owner. Optimistically set the max Amps at 40A just for a laugh as no chance of that until next Spring. Will address cabling issued to cope with the extra Spring Amps later this year. Glad it all went well and other unit has Second Life. :)

But you must remember not to get run over by a bus before spring !, OK, I guess the worst thing that will happen is the existing fuse will blow. ;)

I keep meaning to write an "Idiots Guide to Nowty Towers", just in case of the proverbial bus accident myself. :?

Your getting home story reminds me of my mate about 15 years ago, returning from a paragliding holiday in Oludeniz, SW Turkey, he returned a few days earlier but his return flight was either 23:55 or 00:05. I cannot remember which but as you can probably guess, he got the right time but the wrong day and turned up at Dalaman airport a day late.

He was flying back to Gatwick, he didn't have a mobile phone, or any spare cash and arrived in a pre booked transfer to the airport on Saturday night. The only flight available to him was to Newcastle at 5:00am and was about £80. He got his debit card out but the staff said the computers were down and were unlikely to be back until Monday morning, but there was a cash machine outside. He attempted the cash machine but it retained his card. In the end he had to go round random strangers and beg to borrow the £80 in cash to pay for the flight. Someone did lend him the money but when he arrived at Newcastle he had no card and no cash to get the train. He thought he would just blag it but he wasn't allowed on the train so he had to borrow someone's phone to phone his sister in Brittany, France because that was the only number he could remember. She managed to call the train station and buy his ticket. That got him home to near Southampton, luckily he literally lives 100m from a train station. But then after getting home very late on Sunday night, he still had to get the train to Gatwick the following evening to retrieve his car after work and pay a penalty fee for picking his car up late. :lol:

I cannot remember if this photo was from the same holiday because I went there about 3 times back then.

That's some story, it's never a good feeling when it goes wrong during travel. I'll be back to seek advice and back up when it's cable n fuse upgrade time!
