A mates quote, thoughts?

A pal had a quote for a PV install, details I have are
24x405W JA panels 9.8kW
Solis hybrid inverter
2x 3.3kW givenergy batteries

£18.5k quoted.

Is that as insane as I imagine it to be?

That.s about double the cost of the gear, it does seem steep.

Maybe not totally insane but its OTT.

My back of fag packet workings, I reckon worse case costs should be,

Panels - £5k
Inverter - £1k
Batteries - £3k
Mounting, cables, isolators, etc. - £2k
Scaffolding - £1k
Fitting - £2k
Total - £14k, might even manage to shave another £1k or £2k off that too.

I reckon for £18.5k, MCS fitted, you can get a 3 phase, 15kW of PV, 12kW 3P inverter and 10kWh of batteries.

I fear that the relative slow down in supply, together with the state of the pound, plus the fairly high level of demand, is likely to keep on pushing prices up. The bottom line is that people will still buy stuff at these high prices, and that is going to mean that some are just going to up their prices to whatever the market will bear.

The pound has dropped relative to the yuan, for example, by around 10% over the past year, so that alone will have pushed up the prices of all the Chinese made components by around 10%, without the recent supply and demand issues.

Yup, there's going to be a lot of daily mail now need who bought high & aren't getting the payback they "reckoned" to deal with as renewables fallout.

Likely the price of iodine tablets has gone up exponentially too.

I had a quick run through it and came up with around £14k. At his current rate of power use it looks like about 8 years payback. It certainly makes me glad that we got in when we did. He is also coming up against 'out of stock' all the time. :(

Without FiT, why do you need MCS? Therefore why pay a "Solar Company" a few grand to "install".

You can buy the gear yourself (from ITS, TradeSparky, Bimble, or wherever), then: a roofer will put the panels up there for £200 or so, an electrician will hook up the inverter for similar. And you're good to go.

I am not surprised to see £14k costs and 18k quoted... it's a seller's market.
With inflation as it is by now I would have expected to see quotes on a "costs plus" basis to allow for materials being more exoensive when they become available. Maybe that would give away the margin, so they will just come back for extra money later...

We had spoken about that...

Fair points AE, it is a business after all. I just think they've padded a little too much.
