Hi,

I have an installation of 16 of these 250w panels. They seem to be working well & I’m pleased with them. They have been in for almost 12 years.

I’ve noticed that they seem to be available via an eBay seller for almost £500 each. Am I missing something here, or is there something special about these panels which makes them still valuable? I’m thinking of upgrading, as I can get 10 x 400 modern panels in less same space, and was wondering if there is any market for the old ones which would ease the financial burden.

I do, and I can see why you are asking the question. However, I understand that there was a recent ruling that generation equipment could be replaced with like for like capacity in the event of failure. My logic is that the replacement of 16 x 250 with 10 x 400 is such a like for like replacement as there would be no gross increase in capacity into the inverter - should failure occur of course.

I did look it up some months ago shortly after publication.

Sorry what, £500 each for a 250W second hand panel? 500, not 50? This eBay listing must be a chancer hoping someone doesn't know any better as that's outrageous.

As per AGT I picked up a bunch of 230W and 265W panels recently for £45 each, I'll be getting the bulk of them rigged up next weekend. Pics to follow

They are listed as new, but even so …. I’ve asked for further info.

Nope, second hand panels are not worth £500, regardless of their provenance.

Edit - sorry just saw your post saying they're new. Even so they're still not worth that. You can buy brand new 400W panels for £300 these days.

For £200 Inc VAT, and less for 400W panels.

I wonder if the argument is like for like is interpreted for exact replacement and not as liberally as simply the output value.

I do get it regarding the panels, I was just wondering if there was anything specific about this particular model which made them so special?

Regarding the Ofgem ruling, it’s plainly there available to view, dated Dec ‘21 I think. It specifically states that exact for like probably won’t be available due to equipment lifecycles and even discusses ways in which capacity increases could be dealt with - which is to contact your FiT supplier and ask for a % reduction in payment to match the same % increase in capacity.
