how far do solar panels stick off the roof?

#1

Post by knighty »

we had a council planning guy out to see about changes we want to make

think everything is ok under permitted development, just need to send a brief description to him for him to box tick

but.. he asked how far the solar will stick off the roof and I've got no idea...

anyone?

I assume, if 120mm is normal, I can say "not more than 140mm" for him to approve that

it's for a workshop and garage, both getting new roofs on... we'll probably go with insulated tin sheets make to look like slate/tiles for both

A quick search indicates not more than 200mm above the roof or on flat roofs 600mm.

If you’re re-roofing anyway why not go for an in-roof solution? Saves money and looks better! (At the expense of slightly reduced output in vey hot conditions.)
12x 340W JA Solar panels (4.08kWp)
3x 380W JA Solar panels (1.14kWp)
6x 2.4kWh Pylontech batteries (14.4kWh)
LuxPower inverter/charger

(Artist formally known as ******, well it should be obvious enough to those for whom such things are important.)

I'm open to that idea, problem is most systems I found when I googled weren't really diy friendly, I could find kits/tims etc.

building will be approx. 25m long (as long as they let me build up close to boundary, 22m if not) I'd like to do as much as I can myself, and fit as much solar as possible,

I think on the original FIT the panel had to be 200mm down from the ridge.

This is more for wind uplift than snow loads etc
Pretty sure designers now need to allow a maintenance space either side of the array for safe access/egress to comply with CDM regs.
