It seems quite an attractive idea? 'Right love, we're moving. Grab the solar!' Many millions live in flats and are locked out of easy access to solar PV. I still like these systems.

I'm in standby mode! I get that the price per kW can't be compared. I get that they can only be so big. Yet multiply those millions of potential PV micro generation homes and you've got GWh's. What's up with that I ask in an enquiring and entirely non threatening fashion?

I’ve been well impressed with Nowty’s totals for Camelot’s contribution to National Grid to date. Then the mention of financial assistance for installation of PV on certain properties reminded me of the number of new builds since 2016 which would have had it installed by regulation had it not been rescinded!
Checking the office for National Statistics then the total up to Mar 31 2020 was 823,270. Unfortunately figures later than this are not listed. If we take an annual average of the previous four years and apply to those years ‘20 & ‘21 then I think we could safely assume the figure to go beyond the million mark. By applying a conservative average of just 2kWp per property and the total becomes rather large. Afraid beyond Megawatts my brain ceases to function with any degree of certainty! While it may be but small potato’s compared to the overall national figure, surely each kWh generated reduces the reliance on fossil fuel, of what ever type and wherever it may come from not to mention strain upon the grid.
Just thinking about how much further along the journey to self sufficiency we might have been.
*cough* micro plug in solar door canopies, ..there's plenty of scope for that.

To be fair to the plug in variety on the continent, I did read a while back that (at least) some of them you replace a socket with a special socket and the potentially live end plug has hidden prongs so that fixes the "suicide plug thing". And I'm sure you could easily design a safe plug with a latching relay so the pins are absolutely never live under any circumstances (unplugged).
Then the only issue remaining is the risk in masking an overloaded shared mains circuit.
So I would be OK safetywise with say, a 500W max "plug in" system were your only adding circa 2A to an existing 32A ringmain, subject to the elimination of any live pins on plug. And I believe its legal to replace an existing socket DIY.
Would I say this requires DNO notification ?, obviously not if you want mass adoption, the DNO's would need to be a bit more pro-active in measuring their voltages and take the necessary actions.

The difference in uptake between WT1 & WT2 is remarkable as is being beyond a theoretical 0.5GWh pa in generation.

What a set of figures! Just lieing here toying with over half a GWh in my mind and wondered if anyone here lives close to any of the interconnects to Europe? They could legitimately be pushing their rooftop generated electrons to the interconnect and in some infitesimal way be undermining Putin's weaponised gas play. Now THAT is a happy thought!
