I have considered changing the panels, which would also expand the capacity , but i cannot financially justify it and anyways i hate thowing good working stuff away.
My reason for replacing the panels is that I am removing my never completed solar thermal and want to completely fill the south side of my garage roof with panels (I'd like them all the same) and will put the existing system on the north facing side rather than get rid of them.

I had my first ever £1000/quarter payment this year on the system I installed in January 2010.

My understanding was if you upgraded the panels from say 5kW to 6kW. That is a 20% uplift. So before lets say you generated 5000kWh in the year, you now generate 6000kWh through the meter. However, you will only be paid for 5/6 of the generation. ie 5000kWh. The efficiency may be improved but that is what gives the headline generation per panel so you won't benefit on the FIT.

I am probably wrong but isnt it the case that the more efficient panels will generate more in marginal conditions so the OP might only get 5/6 of the generation BUT that could still be more than they would have got in a sub optimal year with their original panels ?

Not impossible but could be the others way round if the manufacturer optimises for largest STC output.

You need to take a deep dive into the specs, particularly the temperature an irradiance coefficients.

Completely made up numbers follow. Original panel 1m2 20% efficient. advertised as 400W. New panel is more efficient at say 30%. Therefore its output for 1m2 is 600W. It is advertised as a panel outputting 600W.

You need to declare to the FIT team the new panel output and then they will apply the ratio to the calculations. So efficiency doesn't come into it. It is the output
