Net metering - export without FIT

Hi,

I have a smart meter and solar installed as a DIY, so I don’t have a FIT.

If I export to the grid, I know I won’t get paid, but will I get charged? I’ve read some older meters can’t differentiate between import and export.

How does this work when using smart meters?

Thanks.

Smart meters all record import and export in separate registers, so there is no worry about export being recorded as import. They can do net metering, too (where export offsets import) but that's not enabled in the UK.

The only country I know of where smart meters are set by default to charge export as import is Spain, but Spain has some of the most bizarre laws about PV I've ever seen.

There was one type of electronic (non smart) meter a few years back I heard that did this but its almost unheard of and as you have a smart meter, it won't happen. As OGB say's it will be logged in the separate export register.
