Stings a bit, and there goes my credit balance. However I do feel that I got a lot of energy for my money. If we have a mild Jan/Feb I’ll be fine. However another cold snap and I’ll have to increase my DD from its current £33.

I think I need to change from Good Energy to Octopus for sensible Day / Night rates.

Had a smart meter fitted on 16th November. Found I am using less energy because of the time spent looking at the indoor display / turning things off.
I do need to lock it into a safe so I cant read it and try to get a bit of life back.

Our gas and electric came out at £260 for the month.
Electrical energy usage was up from 5kWh day to 7 kWh. Some of that is I have converted 2/3 of the detached garage into a study area, I am now working from there. I only have a fan heater.
I did find keeping the fan heater on 24 7on the thermostat did use less energy overall.
I have 70 mm insulation on the floating floor, 140mm on the ceiling, 90mm on 3 walls and 140 mm on the dividing wall.

The gas usage is what it is. We had cavity wall insulation put in 2 years ago, with that and the replacement windows and porch that I put on the house. The heating and hot water usage is about 8500 kWh per year.
I think we loose a lot of heat through the floor. Previous owners glued laminate floor to the concrete. So it's very cold.
We have put a couple of thin rugs down in the sitting room.

Haven't seen our bill yet, but from my own data it looks like the period from 30th November to 31st December (estimating what the last few days will be) is going to be something like 6kWh at the peak rate of 33.26p, so about £1.99, a whopping 757kWh at the off-peak rate of 17.831p and 31 days of the standing charge at 41.72p/day, so a total (inc VAT) of around £149.90. We have no other form of fuel, no gas, oil, solid fuel, etc, so this is our total energy usage.

Those numbers include charging the car, and we've used that a bit more than usual this month and had few opportunities to charge it from solar. The car charger has used 116kWh this month (all at the off-peak rate) so the house total comes down to about 641kWh off-peak, bringing the bill down to about £129.22 not including running the car, still more than we would normally use for December, but not that much more.

Last December we used about 80kWh less for the month on heating the house and hot water (excluding the car charging bit), all at the off-peak rate, so it looks as if the recent cold snap cost us around £14.26 extra at a rough guess.

This is what I think our 2022 total electricity usage (including charging the car) is likely be (assuming my estimates for the final few days of this month are about right). Usually December is slightly lower than January:

Gas - 350kWh, Electric 145kWh

Total cost (incl SC & VAT) Electric £60.36, Gas £41.68

Total cost - £102.04

(Have used approx 1.5m3 of home processed wood for heating and some cooking).

Log firewood at 20% MC is between 1,400kWh and 2,000kWh per m³ (data taken from the US government, here: https://www.forestresearch.gov.uk/tools ... -of-fuels/ ). Assuming a mean value of 1,700kWh/m³ then the wood adds about another 2,550kWh to those figures (only to put them in perspective).

Looks like the total energy usage (gas, wood and electricity) was probably somewhere around 3,045kWh for the month.

The peak rate usage was for the last saving session. We do have a wood burner which has been in constant use.

Total £169.44 with a few days to go. I should make it into January once the bill has dropped with around a tenner left in my Ripple VB. That's with Dec Ripple generation taken into account but ignoring any govt funds.

Feb & March I'll actually have to subsidise from my own pocket. Who knows though, the Welsh winds may be raging and that ascending equinox magic will be kicking in.

I'll be absolutely honest here and say that I see this as a complete result for Casa De. We have been doing serious miles in the EV purely on homecharging, the extended battery stack is performing well and miserable though the Dec PV take has been it's still the best Dec I'll have seen.

Next year being a full year for Ripple WT1 & our extra PV will see a full year too, as will the hydroturbine and maybe a little kick at the end of year from WT2-WT9? It is going to be absolutely epic!

Makes a BIG difference! Brings the total for the month down to somewhere around 1,770kWh, which seems a lot more reasonable. There was me thinking you must be heating a stately home to have used that much to heat it!
