Octopus Go to Intelligent switch

#1

Post by NikoV6 »

Been on Go for a few years now, anybody made the switch to Intelligent?

I am thinking extra hours of cheap rate allows ASHP more time to get morning temp up. Also, longer opportunity to charge car and battery. Longer for car useful as daily use can sometimes use 100 miles

Thoughts??

I changed from Go Faster to Intelligent Octopus sept 21, there is a thread about it here,

As you have a Tesla (?) I would say its a no brainer, cheaper power for a longer 6 hour 23:30 to 05:30 cheapslot.

It can be a bit finicky doing the on-boarding (a test charge with your vehicle) and it sometimes fails so you need to repeat it. But once your on it, if you don't like the way it stops and starts the charging to suit Octopus, you can disable the smart charging and use it just like standard Go.

You can get extra cheap slots too (for the whole house) if the APP wants to charge your car outside of the cheapslot window but be careful about that because there is a fair use policy so if you normally suck in as much power in the 6 hour slot day after day in winter (like me ) you may be charged full rate on those "additional" slots.

The important thing to remember is the cheap slot is 23:30 to 05:30 everyday for the whole house whether you charge the car or not.

Thanks for that, will take a read!

As we almost never charge car (Model S) from grid during the day, hopefully the overnight extra hours will be enough.

Do you know if it interferes with Eco+ mode on a zappi, where it charges the car only on excess solar?

Yes, but in Summer (or whenever) you just turn off the Smart charging on the APP and everything will work as it does for you now. But don't press "disconnect device" or else you will have to do the onboarding again within 30 days or be kicked off the tariff.

I have a slow inverter which means I can’t get my batteries to 100% in the winter months so the extra slots are quite handy.
I wish I’d known about this before the cold snap last month as Decembers bill is quite painful, too much at peak rate 🤦🏻‍♂️
Looking to add 2 more 9.5kw batteries and a 3.6kw ac inverter but just waiting for givenergy to confirm it will, work with existing batteries, solar inverter etc as it will be 2 systems needing to talk to each other.

Does anyone know if you interrupt the smart charge and it was smart charging before off peak starts,( SHMBO decided she needed the Tesla) does the charging already done remain at the off peak rate?

I've no idea, its one of those 50:50 situations and you have to wait for your bill to find out.

Yes. I make notes of charging periods and I often unplug it during additional off peaks. I have limited data from December but will definitely have much more from January (by comparing notes with the bill) but I think that once you plug your car and Octopus assign additional slots then they remain off peak even if you unplug your car, e.g. you plug car at 8pm, additional slots are from 9pm-10pm, 10:30-11pm, if you unplug at 9.50 the slot at 10:30 will stay off peak. I'm however not sure if it remains off peak if you unplug car before 9pm.

I've not played around with the extra slots on IO for ages but I've been keeping my EV at 50% SOC in case of a saving session. As there is one tomorrow, I'm going to ask the Octopus APP to give me full battery for 08:00 and only allow it to charge from 05:00 on the Tesla APP. That might extend my cheapslot for the whole house all the way through the in day adjustment window.
