Outgoing Octopus

(nowtythread for searching)
I've bitten the bullet and applied for Outgoing Octopus, so I will be opted out of deemed export on my FIT. The 15p / kWh on the fixed export is just too tempting now you can have it with IO import.

I'll let you all know how the switch goes.

Me too, will be testing Octopus assertion that no MCS certificate is needed! G99 signed off and export MPAN in progress!

How does this work in the customers favour?
Currently I get a lot of off peak schedules to maximise using the heat pumps, would this tariff affect that?

I think this is an export tariff which you can combine with some or all of the various Octopus off-peak tariffs

Until a few weeks back you could only get 4.1p / kWh export combined with either the IO or GO import tariff. But now you can have 15p fixed export with IO import and 8p fixed export on GO import.

i haven’t set up an export tariff so not sure how this would work with IO, I am thinking of increasing our storage in November but not sure how I can benefit.
Im assuming I would export when I am using a small amount of electricity and import at all, other times when I have off peak energy. Is it that straightforward? That sounds too good to be true…..

Pretty much how I understand it for Intelligent Octopus. Import overnight to fill car and battery at 7.5p a unit, export during the day any excess at 15p a unit. Seems too good to be true but I think that's what they are offering?

Yep its a bit nuts and even if you have a small home battery, you could game the IO for say a 9 hour cheap slot and charge for 1 hour, then export for 1 hour, then rinse and repeat another 4 times.

This assumes you have the means to do a forced discharge.

Even without a battery it looks good.

At the moment for around six months of the year, solar PV heats my hot water cylinder. Sometimes it needs a little help if there are a few days of no sunshine. Also sometimes when family visit.

So, I can substitute diverting surplus PV from heating water to export at 15p per kWh and heat the water during the IO 6 hr window at 7.5p per kWh or anytime gas at 7p.

In three years my smart meter export register states I have exported c. 600kWh pa - this is after diversion to the HWC. Deemed export is around 50% of 1900kWh pa, so it looks like a winner to me.

Also, it makes a battery more viable as I could export from it as well as just using it to save peak import.

Yes its going to be a totally different operation, making the solar diverter almost redundant. Even in summer, heat everything overnight on the cheap slot, and export as much as possible in the daytime.
