Switching to Octopus Go Intelligent….

Hi,

In looking at my Octopus account page, it appears to show that the path from normal Go to Intelligent Go has a quick EV charge test as part of the application process. If you have a compatible charger, app and vehicle it “should” pass and then you’re in? Is that how it works? How long does the test take, is it automated and other associated questions………

Also, once you’re in, if the charger is switched off for whatever reason then I guess you still get the discounted 6 hours regardless of how much EV charging you do?

I have a Zappi 2 charger and my son visits regularly with his EV, so I guess I could switch? We sold our EV a couple of years ago but still have the Zappi charger - which could probably do with a software upgrade.

I don't remember how long the qualifying test lasted.

I have had passing thought on what would be the least expensive used EV that would qualify for IO and if there was icing on the cake it would have V2H capability too. I didn't look any further but the first hurdle might be doable?

I Know nooofing about car chargers.

Could the Zappi not charge some of your LIFP04 batteries every so often.
Would that not keep Octopus Happy.

FWIW, we plan on moving from octopus go to io. Io seems just confusingly better all round - longer cheaprate time slot, and a greater export rate. Odd tbh, suspect a levelling will occur at some point.

Octopus makes a revenue stream out of grid balancing services by controlling your smart loads so it will always give some sort of premium benefit over Octopus Go.

Er, no.

EV chargers, such a a Zappi, aren’t actually “chargers” at all. They are “interfaces” between the vehicle and AC supply & filled with such exotic things such as safety features, interlocks and “control ability” via apps/keypad which permit timed charging, solar excess etc to be implemented. Furthermore, as they are AC, connecting to one of said Lifep04 cells/battery would result in a large and expensive bang! The true actual charger for an EV is within the EV and converts the incoming AC to DC to charge the battery. Unless of course you DC rapid charge in which case the DC connections go straight through to the vehicle battery. All done by lots of well designed power electronics by people who know what they are doing!

Best kept well away from I think.

I have a couple of mates with EVs who I could ask round for a free charge, but some quick maths shows that the savings of roughly 1.5p per kWh would quickly vanish. I’m hoping I’ll have another EV during 2024 anyway, so that would solve the problem anyway.
