PAS 63100:2024 - Protection against fire of battery energy storage systems for use in dwellings

I spotted this document a few weeks ago that was published in 2024. A bit of an eye opener for a lot of installs I bet. Free for once as well. Though of course all the other documents referenced cost a fortune.

some points to note:
  • lots of regs for installs in the house
  • max in house 40kWh, outhouse 80kWh
  • Non combustible container for cells with isolator included inside the container. Free standing cells not allowed

Can’t remember if it was this document or another that also mentions location of batteries, not just loft, but in general fire escape route.

Access away from children etc.

Looked at it in my training course

Definition of container is very broad, some of the containers available would do nothing !

b) BS EN IEC 62485-5 for lithium-ion battery chemistries.

It states enclosures need to conform to this standard. I don't want to pay £250 to be told a metal box.

The whole document is a set of links that would cost probably 10's of thousands of £ to access.

Another way for insurance companies not to pay out..

Seriously though, looks like they are looking for each unit to tested as a complete assembly and not the DIY route

Is it retrospective?

That's what the feeling I was getting.

Isn't this guidance for installers? ie, you can still DIY your own battery(?)

It’s a means of compliance so you still have to work to it, just like BS7671 as a way of ensuring a safe installation along with the EESS code of practice
