Outgoing Octopus - question

Hi,

Ok, so I’ve finally had a statement/bill from them which reflects my outgoing activity. However, I noticed in the tariff info box that it says estimated annual usage - with an amount of 2700kWh against it. Where would they have got that from? Certainly not from me. I’m hoping that it will be considerably greater than that! Has anyone else had anything similar? Jan will be my first full month and I’m on track for about 870kWh. It would have been more but I had some Lux config issues which needed to be addressed, all done now though & I’m hoping it will be over a thousand in Feb.

Cheers - Rob

Sans reliable info I assume it is a guess and nothing more.

I’ve been on Octopus Outgoing for over a year now and my first estimate was also 2700 kWh. My latest Octopus Outgoing statement says my estimated annual usage is 21,226 kWh.

Last year my actual export was 12,251 KWh, in other words my first statement started with a vast underestimate and now it’s overestimating.

Don’t over think it.

So long as they pay you correctly does an estimate matter?

Isn’t this expected to be a reduction, not an increase?

You can find out anybodies billed consumption and supplier using this link below. IMV its outrageous and an absolute breaking of the GDPR rules morally and factually, but you can.

I did a search a few weeks ago looking to change suppliers, basically to compate unit rates from each company, so went to the Moneysavingsexpert site. I inputted my details in the link below and it correctly showed my supplier and readings. I thought that was a bit odd, so i typed in my parents. Same happened, correct results, so i tried my sisters, same, then my next door neighbour (all with permission i hasen to add).

In each and every single time i entered just the postcode and house number it displayed the accurate supplier and consumption details for each property i checked.

Its likely they either picked on a standard consumption figure of 2700 for you, or had supplier access to what Martin Lewis clearly has from another source.

Pop in your details and see if its right for you currently, then try elsewhere if you want (and have approval).

Personally, i think its nothing but disgraceful that anybody can see what anybody else uses, and from whom, just by entering a postcode on some website with zero permissions.

I am amazed at that, I wonder whether the website has a sort-of privileged access to the data and should have put controls on the access they gave to others?

I guess some well-meaning low-IQ CS goon required all energy companies to upload this data to a database that is publically accessible to empower consumers to get better price comparisons from energy companies.

I'm not sure what nefarious act you could do with this information though. Except to maybe bitch about how much the old woman over the road cranks her central heating.

Thanks, I’m gobsmacked. It shows me as an address, plus the same address with EXPORT……. Surely can’t be GDPR compliant?

Actually I think there are security implications to this data. I've just raised a complaint, I want to see where it goes in relation to GPDR as well.

As an aside, it doesn't give the data for 10 downing street, but it does give the data for some parts of RAF Stafford.
