DNO - register for SoFar ME3000 charge controller and Pylontech Batteries

#1

Post by JC_UK »

Hi again,

We already have roof mounted PV solar iunstalled with FIT.

I assume I will need to register the SoFar ME3000 charge controller and Pylontech Batteries with the DNO.
Does the DNO form need to specify how many batteries are being connected or the charger only?

I am planning to get my electrician to make the connection to the CU, grid side of the FIT generation meter for the installed PV, with the suitable MCB and then commission the charger and batteries.

I am also considering additional PV and possibly a hybrid inverter.

Can I do the application/registration myself? Solar company did the original application for the PV.

Any hints/tips/pointers for the DNO application/registration>

Many thanks
JC

The DNO sees the battery inverter as a grid-connected "generator" and the same for your solar. If all your generating capacity exceeds 16A (which it will) then you need to apply for permission, if it is up to 16A you just need to inform the DNO.

These permissions used to be called G83 and G59, they are now called G99 and G100.

The fact that the entire purpose of your battery installation is to dramatically reduce the amount you export is entirely lost on the DNO. They work on the assumption that you'll be discharging your batteries at full whack, while your solar is generating at full whack, and while using no power yourself.

(Artist formally known as ******, well it should be obvious enough to those for whom such things are important.)

This is why I keep suggesting an info flow chart for this sort of thing.

Nearly, they used to be called G83 and G59, they are now called G98 and G99.

G100 is for export limitation.

The problem with a flowchart it will be out of date before you know it.

JC_UK - Do you know who your DNO is, if not roughly where in the country are you, a county will probably suffice for me to find the relevant form / guidance.

Integrated micro-generation and storage
Working in partnership with the ENA, a relaxation was written into G99. This relaxation has primarily been developed where a customer is wishing to combine a G83/G98 generator with an Energy Storage Device.

To qualify, the following conditions must be met:

Total generation capacity installed should not exceed 7.36KW (including battery storage) - NOTE this is the inverter power and nothing to do with how much PV or batteries you have.
All generators should be connected via a Type approved G83/G98 protection device
The maximum export should be limited to 3.68KW per phase utilising a Type approved EREC G100 device
The system should not generate during a power-cut (island mode)

If you believe your application complies with the above criteria, please complete the G99 A1.2 form and email it to connectionapplications@enwl.co.uk.

If your getting a Sofar ME3000SP,

They don't actually assume that you're going to fire your total generation (Inc battery inverter or whatever) down the grid, they are interested in a fault scenario. So, a situation where X kW of solar plus X kW of battery inverter minus no house usage and any CT export limiting you've got on ther has been accidentally turned off or died somehow.

Among other stuff like what'll happen in the event of a DNO power failure.

Am currently in the throws of an excruciating GXX form and have had a few chats with a helpful DNO chap.

I do wonder if/how they'd ever find out about a CT limited second system but hey ho

Unless you tell them or f'k something up they wont. ;)

I'm in ENWL area as well but closer to Preston - I think they are quite reasonable and I have PV and batteries and am installing more PV and have permission to export more than 16A but had to do all the forms and a few chats - but I think you will deal with Kendal not Preston - think they still have an office there?
