Joining cable

#1

Post by ecogeorge »

Hi folks , suggestions please ...........
need to join a 4 core flexible cable (too short) -probably .5mm cross section . Low voltage 12v plus data. Joint needs to be water proof (ish) and robust. Used in milking parlour . Cable will be exposed but rigid and unlikely to be hosed with water.
I've tried soldering and heat shrink but joint is very flexible and guess not very strong? I have attempted to cover with a section of cable sheath but its not the correct size.
As an ex boss used to say ..........What would you do ?

You don't actually say what it is connected to or what current it takes, but why not just replace the whole cable from end to end with one of the required length - no worries about joints that way? Could you use a length of Cat5/6?

Can't replace cable - sealed milk meter. Current probably 4/5w only. CAT cable too flimsy.........

You could just wrap the joint with self-amalgamating tape to strengthen it up.

I would usually cable tie the two cables together tightly (so it forms a loop with the joints in the loop) - that way, any mechanical stress is taken by the cable ties and the intact cable, rather than the joint.

Thank you for your replies ........
The cable jointing kits (although good) look bulky.......
Think i wll measure cable OD and get correct heat shrink -say 200mm length , then fix cable with join rigidly fixed in milking parlour.
thanks

A small wiska box with stuffing glands would be my way to provide an enclosure for joining 2 cables with either din rail, wagos, choc block inside

Make sure it is adhesive lined heat shrink as it's sturdier and waterproof.
