Re: ASHP & triple glazing
A friend lives in a listed building in a a conservation area and couldn't afford the extortionate cost of repairing/upgrading the very-leaky sash windows. He had "tertiary" windows fitted on the inside. The ones he had work like sash windows there there are two panes and you can either lower the top one or raise the bottom one. Looked good and made a huge difference.Moxi wrote: ↑Fri Mar 28, 2025 9:04 am Richard77
If you hanker after 3g have you considered the "poor man" alternatives ? With three ankle biters in the house I tend to have to watch the pennies when it comes to home improvements and I have been mulling over the pros and cons of tertiary glazing for use in winter in my 1880 slate cottage. Again youtube is a good area to look at but given the deep recess of my windows and the very uneven stone finish of the reveals I think my best option will be to get sheets of polycarbonate or similar cut to the size of the window frame less 5mm to 10mm all around, then I can fit standard foam pipe insulation around the edges of the "glazing" sheet and use the foam to push fit (compression) the glazing near to the window frame using the foam to profile itself against the uneven reveals and create a seal.
That will go in in winter and then mid spring they can all be popped out and stored in the shed till next autumn/ winter. It should make the necessary savings on the heating side of things and if an when we next need new windows / doors we can investigate 3G to see if we can stretch to one or more units.

Strong sun today so laid out two small black plastic identical squares in direct sunlight to see the difference after a 30 minute heatsoak. It came in at 3 degs again.

3g

Knowing we see a heck of a lot more non sunny hours I'll happily accept the trade off.

Re: ASHP & triple glazing
I've always hated getting trades in, as they always seem to do something wrong, I'm very hands on, there's not much i haven't done. My brother and I removed about 3.5 meters from the back of my house to fit bi-folds, no issues apart from the shear hard work fitting goal post steel work down to the foundations and all signed off.Richard77 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 28, 2025 7:50 am I am always weary to get tradespeople in nowadays after cowboy builders nearly brought the whole back of the house down when creating an opening for bi-folds and removing a chimney breast a few years back.
Still trying to get back on track after that...
Cowboys everywhere unfortunately. I can imagine there are plenty fitting windows, as it's very "diyable". YouTube is a godsend and a curse sometimes. Watch a few videos, buy a van and next thing you know they are doing jobs on people's houses!
About 30 years ago just after I met my wife, she had double glazing fitted to the house shed just bought, the fitter did such a poor job, I don't think he used a single screw just foamed them in, but he didn't even clean the dust and dirt off, or make the brickwork moist. I think he walked off the job early one day as my Mrs ripped into him.

Yep getting reliable trades is getting harder and harder - I used to do lots of my own stuff but as I get older its getting harder to do it - not helped by the fact that I started a second young family so the lads need a lot of my time too.
I have four slates missing on the roof in different places, I have all the gear - know what I need to do but just dont get a weather window that lines up with available time at the minute - getting a roofer to put a slate or two back is possible but I object to paying North of £300 for 45 minutes work.

Oh yes _ I had forgotten about that - I'm going to delete my earlier post about my DIY bodge plans as I dont want to detract from the more professional product they produce - apologies.
Edit typically the delete button isnt available on that post now so I edited it to tertiary glazing options - Stinsy would you edit your post to please to remove my bodgeneering plans in favour of the members secondary / tertiary solution

Re: ASHP & triple glazing
Nothing wrong with bodgeneering. I did a plastic film over a Velux a few years back. It worked but was requested to be removed by the management quite quickly. The idea is sound but my execution was not.Moxi wrote: ↑Fri Mar 28, 2025 10:50 amMoxi wrote: ↑Fri Mar 28, 2025 10:46 amOh yes _ I had forgotten about that - I'm going to delete my earlier post about my DIY bodge plans as I dont want to detract from the more professional product they produce - apologies.

Re: ASHP & triple glazing
No not at all JB bodging an intermediate solution has its merits but I feel my solution is a bit too close to the members solution so I would rather not risk undermining his hard work and business.Joeboy wrote: ↑Fri Mar 28, 2025 10:53 amNothing wrong with bodgeneering.
