Loads of downsides to "open loop". Pumping efficiency is a big one. But with closed loop you can have antifreeze in the loop so you don't risk freezing up. Trying to extract heat from normal water at 5℃ (or whatever) without freezing it is destined to fail. Then you have all the filters to maintain. And the licensing that comes with "extracting" the water (they don't care you're putting the water straight back).
Anyway. Closed loop is the way to go!
