Perhaps flaw was the wrong wording, and you explain it so much better, I'm never very good at explaining things, I love the reverse thinking as well.Moxi wrote: ↑Sun Dec 29, 2024 10:52 am The best way to prove the concept for us will be to pop the air conditioner outside on cooling cycle with the exhaust vent fed into the house via the cat flap - that way it will operate to strip heat from the outside air and eliminate infiltration air by dint of over pressure on the discharge side of the circuit. Just need a suitable cold dry day or a big rain cover for the unit.

Nothing wrong with what you said and it made me check my base assumptions again which is always a good thing for me as I am apt to over think and convolute matters.
I would love to just fit a split system in and I think I have found the one spot down stairs where it could go BUT I need to bring the family along gently on the journey or face mutiny in the ranks.
Equally I would love to just miss out the middle ground and go straight to an A2W system but I face the same potential mutiny and I could end up with a system that I might only use 3 months a year for heating and it could be the most efficient cop in the world but if it’s not used it’s not being efficient is it.

Three months per year heating is a good point. Not thought of that before. I reckon we are closer to eight months per year when we have heating on.Moxi wrote: ↑Sun Dec 29, 2024 12:07 pm Nothing wrong with what you said and it made me check my base assumptions again which is always a good thing for me as I am apt to over think and convolute matters.

Re: ASHP & triple glazing
Looks like a good night out, my wife has a hankering to visit Edinburgh at some point, just waiting until the kids are a bit more tame as we wouldn’t want to scare the locals.
The temperature here last night was around 8 degrees, the house thermostat was dialled down to 16 degrees to stop the heating having a chance to come on and a 1.7kW oil rad was put on a smart plug in the lounge cold corner and a 500W rad was on the landing - timed to come on half way through the cheap slot on vanilla- woke to a comfy house despite the wind being gusting to 40 mph and had a great sleep. Like Mart and many others we are slowly finding our way to efficient comfort without reliance on gas. With the car charging on type 1 the house battery charging and the two small heaters cycling we pulled just over 23kWh in the vanilla zone which will see us comfortably through to the next zone with between 40 and 60 % in the house stack depending on levels of insolation we get.
Definitely still scope for more solar pv though as it will all help minimise reliance on vanilla and “the man” but as to my next move for DHW I’m thinking it’s got to be finding somewhere to put a hwc ? That’s going to be interesting and diplomatically problematic.

There is an old airing cupboard that once held the tank and boiler, but about 30 years ago the boiler was replaced with a combi in the attack and the tank deleted. I'm stealing the back half of the airing cupboard to make the en suite squarer, that alone causes some storage headaches so no way I'd get away with taking the whole thing!

If i ever get round to swapping Combi out I think i would do a Nowty and built an external insulated 'plant' room/cupboard to house the DHW tank.
Only other option i see is under the ground floor suspended timber floor, but only have 5 ft clearance....

Re: ASHP & triple glazing
I hoping we can use the Aerotherm UniTower, as that will fit where the current boiler is, no way will I get away with stealing the airing cupboard, and I don't particularly want it in the loft. It might be possible to make the airing cupboard bigger though, but not ideal.Stinsy wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 11:36 am

Re: ASHP & triple glazing
You'd easily get a tank under the floor. The horizontal ones I've been looking at are c. 70cm high...

Re: ASHP & triple glazing
Our unit for dhw ended up being a glenhill? Fits into a corner of the loft with minimal space lost. All the other gubbins are in there too so it's handy if I ever need to check anything.Ronski wrote: ↑Mon Dec 30, 2024 1:33 pmI hoping we can use the Aerotherm UniTower, as that will fit where the current boiler is, no way will I get away with stealing the airing cupboard, and I don't particularly want it in the loft. Anecdote time, we used to have an airing cupboard with hwt and next door to it was a warm air heating boiler. This is the thick end of 20yrs ago. Got it all ripped out and left with 2 cupboards side by side. I knocked through the wall and took 1/3rd of the width of one cupboard. The remaining space became a towel press and general bathroom products store. The 1 & 1/3rd cupboard space I kitted out as the smallest cloakroom in the world. It has a small sink, towel rail, hot & cold water, a mirror and an all important toilet. As I said at the time to swmbo "nobody cares about the size of a toilet room when they need to go". So it has turned out to be, very handy indeed.
