The NREL one (with the graphic) has been publicised a year or two ago, involving the need to pump hot sand around. The BBC report which the article refernces (but skips over https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-61996520) doesn't suggest anything like that, just a heat exchanger (recovery) circuit in the cheapo sand heap.
