AI and resource consumption...

Any news worthy story. Good things to watch at the Cinema, Theatre, on TV or have you read a good book lately?

AI and resource consumption...

I haven't seen this picked up anywhere else... https://www.theguardian.com/technology/ ... telligence

Technology analysts Gartner believe that by 2025, unless a radical rethink takes place in how we develop AI systems to better account for their environmental impact, the energy consumption of AI tools will be greater than that of the entire human workforce. By 2030, machine learning training and data storage could account for 3.5% of all global electricity consumption. Pre-AI revolution, datacentres used up 1% of all the world’s electricity demand in any given year.
I'm sure that it applies to other internet functions too... I wince every time I hear the BBC incite people to download podcasts or watch anything online whenever they want to, ignoring the overall cost of the internet.

I suspect that the deteriorating quality of R4 on FM (signal being progressively weakened?) is to drive peope away so that they can claim that it is used so little that the govt. can sell the frequencies for something else (and the Beeb can save money on powering transmitters too.)

2.0 kW/4.62 MWh pa in Ripples, 4.5 kWp W-facing pv, 9.5 kWh batt
30 solar thermal tubes, 2MWh pa in Stockport, plus Congleton and Kinlochbervie Hydros,
Most travel by bike, walking or bus/train. Veg, fruit - and Bees!

I'm pleased that we are not the only ones who hold that thought. AND why don't the BBC revert to real telephone lines, not interweb ones, for remote interviews? The regularity of c**p calls these days is beyond annoying.
