Forget hybrids go all in on EVs

Any news worthy story. Good things to watch at the Cinema, Theatre, on TV or have you read a good book lately?

I see why some people choose the Hybrid for edge cases but in general i struggle.

Firstly the hybrid is less economical than the diesel model so unless you are religeously charging it is more expensive and perhaps even more expensive if you are!

The Hybrid, with fuel, weights nearly the same as the EV and weight= efficiency.

The extra weight of the ICE drags down the efficiency of the EV

The ICE needs regular running and maintenance.

Many more things to go wrong.

The only reason people buy Hybrids is because of range/charger anxiety which no longer exists - well perhaps the anxiety does.

As someone who owns a PHEV and a BEV, I can say with conviction that BEVs have solved every problem WRT passenger transport.

I bought my Golf GTE because at the time the only BEVs in my price range were LEAF/Zoe and 100-mile BEVs make long journeys a feat of endurance. Nowadays BEVs are priced similarly to equivalent FF cars and 200-miles of real-world range really does fulfill 99% of usecases. Additionally, there are 300-mile BEVs for service engineers and other edge cases who put in mega milages day-in day-out.

I can see the need for PHEV vans. Most trades or local deliveries can use BEV vans. However if you need to shift a tonne of materials 200 miles there and back, you'd need a lot of charging stops in a BEV van.

If a PHEV purchase is instead of a HEV/ICE then I'm all for it. Then the 'Trojan BEV' will help to convert the buyer, and subsequent owners as it travels down the SH chain.

But I do think it's a shame if the PHEV displaces a BEV sale, for fears that may not existent. However, for some there is a genuine issue with charging at home, or at a reasonable leccy price at the moment. I do hope that Europe can get passed the gas shortage asap, with the shift to RE.

I think lots of people can get away with a BEV even without home charging. Particularly if they have workplace charging. But many people do less than 100 miles a week and can therefore charge once a fortnight at a public charger. However home charging is absolutely essential if you have a PHEV.

I agree on the "gateway drug" element though...

5 1/2 years of EV ownership without a charger at home with a 60 mile a day commute - and first 2 years of that didn't have charging at work either!

Have you ever done a post on how that went for you? How you managed, when you charged etc.

In my head, an EV would be a ball ache in that use case, but in London I guess quite common.

I think I did back in the old "other place".

But in summary, I initially took advantage of Sainsbury's largesse with their free 7kW PodPoints - although rapidly discovered that they did indeed enforce the 3 hour parking limit in the car park if you left it there overnight...

There were quite a few 50kW single header chargers around the South Circular, so used those fairly often. And then there was that first big DC charge hub at BP Hammersmith, used that a few times during the first few months as it was free vend!

Then was pleased to see the first installs of the Ubitricity Lamppost chargers in a couple of my nearby streets. That was good.

Also had a short period of throwing an extension lead across the pavement when I went on Agile, but was uncomfortable with the trip hazard for other pavement users even with those cable cover trunking things. But at the same time the Tesla Supercharger network just kept growing and then got charging at work and everything has basically been fine.
