At least then, the fuel would be regularly replenished.
Agree with others, a CO monitor in the room and potentially above/adjacent to it is essential.
As Marshman said diesel can last a while without deteriorating, had some in a Range Rover that was sitting unused for about 5 years and the car still started ok, probably still put in an additive to prolong life though.

I had some dealings with "diesel" at work (actually gas oil back then.)
There were 2 potential problems: biofouling where bugs grew at the water/oil interface and waxing, where long-chain compounds crystallised at low temperatures.
The water came from the repeated condensation of atmospheric moisture each time the air above the fuel "breathed" as the outside temperature changed, and was dealt wiith by regular "desludging" - draining down the very bottom layer to remove the water. You can get away with it in the short term if your fuel outlet is well above the top of the water layer. Don't know how you would dispose of the arisings from desludging in the domestic situation though...
waxing was dealt with by getting rid of summer diesel before winter, when new fuel would have an anti-waxing additive blended in. The trouble was that you couldn't add more in severe weather as the graph of its effeciveness had a reverse "J" shape. Adding more past the bottom was counter-productive. You couldn't just run the fuel line through a warm area either, as the wax wouldn't melt before it got to the filters.

On the subject of diesel the rules on Red diesel are changing on 1st April. You wont be able to buy it to use in most of the equipment / sectors that you can today. You'll have to use Derv!

If you have a diesel generator and a diesel car then storing the fuel for your generator in jerry cans and writing the date on them enables you to put the fuel in your car and refill the jerry cans with fresh every year (or whatever). I write the type & date of the petrol on my cans, mainly due to being a cheapskate when it comes to a discounted "other colour" 5 litre can when all my others have had their spouts chewed by boxer dogs or lost.
