Any news worthy story. Good things to watch at the Cinema, Theatre, on TV or have you read a good book lately?

Good to see the lack of onshore wind in England being compensated for by solar.

Not if Alicia Kearns has anything to do with it.
She’s trying to block the largest solar farm park in the UK 🤬

Digression, so I'm sorry, but whenever people complain about a PV farm, I tend to think back to an article in the Daily Mail, complaining about a picteresque area being blighted by a PV farm (which can be seen if you are up in a helicopter).

An idyll blighted by 18,000 solar panels: Seen from the sky, the reality of alternative energy

It's in Fawley Hampshire

Take a look at it, then maybe scroll up a tad, to see how beautiful the area is!
8.7kWp PV [2.12kWp SSW + 4.61kWp ESE PV + 2.0kWp WNW PV]
Two BEV's.
Two small A2A heatpumps.
20kWh Battery storage.

That is an absolute travesty of planning to allow that blot on the Fawley landscape, it just ruins the idyllic views over the refinery...

Funny how they accidentally took (cropped?) photos that don't show the refinery. Though the 2nd pic does catch some tankers in the top LH corner.

Although there is an even larger one I know of in planning at 840MW west of Oxford.

Looking at the yearly plots in gridwatch it's surprising (to me) how low the seasonal variation in electricity demand actually is, so installing more solar could make a very useful dent in our use of gas. Maybe once a significant number of gas heating systems have moved to heatpumps the picture will be different but last year it looks we used more gas in July or August than we did in October and maybe November too.

Last year was special because there was a risk mainland Europe could run out of gas in the winter time, so the UK did a favour and exported gas through our interconnector and exported as much leccy (by burning more gas) as we could so Europe could build up its storage even more. There also was a problem with the French nuke fleet which made things worse.

This year its almost back to normality with several more floating LNG gas terminals installed double quick.

The good thing about solar, at least for summer, is its in the daytime when demand is at its highest and most of the solar farms are in the south where most of the demand is, so not constrained like wind farms in the far north are sometimes.

The daily mail article is a tiny bit out of date 😁
Unless everyone puts panels on their properties we are going to need some form of energy transported to homes, and some compromise is needed.
Electric pylons aren’t the prettiest structures either!
