I've been bidding for Flir cameras on eBay. Not had much luck. I want to spend £100 and am aware that the old iPhone connector that I have is obsolete so it'll be difficult to sell when I'm done and it won't work when I upgrade my current iPhone 12 to something newer.

I'm sure there's a version or trade counter you can get a quote from to ensure he's quoting reasonable?Stinsy wrote: ↑Thu Jan 23, 2025 4:45 pmHe's not gotten back to me yet. I'll let you know. A bit more than a hundred quid but not a bad offer is this flit https://amzn.eu/d/0KDIMPE 199 quid but got a 55 quid off voucher that you can tick to apply also there’s a mini for 129 quid to plug into your iPhone https://amzn.eu/d/cCTYIAl I’ve got a hikmicro flir and really like it and the company is very helpful I also own a night sight with lazer range finder by then and that’s also a top notch bit of kit as well- 12 dead rats since Xmas cannot lie.

The used ones on eBay are all Flir branded. I’m not averse to other brands or no-name so long as the quality is decent. I generally like to buy better quality used stuff rather than full price new.Moxi wrote: ↑Thu Jan 23, 2025 5:59 pmStinseyStinsy wrote: ↑Thu Jan 23, 2025 12:26 pm I had a fella round the other day to quote for the last 4 windows that aren't 3g (child #2's mate's dad) ysed to be a window fitter, does the odd foreigner for mates.

I like the idea of the phone ones because I’ve already paid for a screen on my phone I just need the sensor and lens.
I think I need to get over myself and pay a bit more…

Re: Why the ‘eye-watering’ cost of heat pumps doesn’t add up
There weee some under a hundred quid on the zom pages but the reviews were generally pants, but maybe worth a look if you know technically what resolution and refresh rates etc that you want ?
I have actually used my flir when hunting the rats in the chicken run as their heat signatures show up really good so I sit quietly and wait for two or more to show up and get settled before reaching for the rifle and nightscope.
If you know how you can, I think, search for open box returns and in those cases you might find the flir you want at or very close to your preferred price range ?
Good luck with the search though they really are useful things to have on many levels.

Get an infiray not a flir. Cheaper and better.
P2 Pro or T3S.

I'd advise against the plug in Flir too. They have an internal battery, which I'd be concerned about longevity. I have a Topdon that seems pretty good.
Here's my topdon and a photo from the same position for comparison

Re: Why the ‘eye-watering’ cost of heat pumps doesn’t add up
I read that the smartphone plug in flir has/had an unreasonably high failure rate based around the camera/phone connection. The cheap handheld flir I bought has been very good for identifying weakness in the home thermal envelope and was excellent in the loft when looking at HP pipe lagging.
It's not much use for big picture stuff.and very much a diy unit but it gets the job done. The 5V battery lasts a long long time.
Had a quick look at Topdon units after reading Smeagal post. They look good and an upgrade over the unit I have.

Re: Why the ‘eye-watering’ cost of heat pumps doesn’t add up
I've been looking. Here are my findings:
- 99% of used ones for sale are Flir branded.
- Flir ones seem to have much lower resolution than non-Flir at the same price point.
- I like the idea of buying a sensor/lens and using the processor and screen on my smartphone.
- My Phone 12 uses a port which is obsolete.
This one fits my criteria: https://amzn.eu/d/4ZtY1az but is way outside my price range and only 80x60 resolution.
More research (procrastination) required!

Re: Why the ‘eye-watering’ cost of heat pumps doesn’t add up
Here is an image from a flir unit. Same room but different location.
I had a flir one pro unit first, but sold it. Then regretted it so replaced it with a topdon tc001.
Note the flir produces a hybrid image with an optical camera masking the lower resolution.
As you can see, I've been chasing a specific cold spot for a while.
