To be expected given the proclivity of Nuclear projects in general to spiral in costs even without global tensions and market shortages. Doesn't bode well for Frances Nuclear renaissance if they still can't build their EPR on time though.

I read elsewhere today that the EU is to challenge the UK on subsidised wind power ? Strange given Mr Macron's announcements a few weeks ago and the follow up statements in various sources that the French Government would need to assist the funding of the Nuclear new build? It will be interesting to watch the progression of both these items given their apparent links.

The one constant here is as usual that the politicians and mandarins continue to argue with each other rather than following the will of the people that put them in power and addressing our needs and concerns.

NEARLY half of France's 56 nuclear reactors are presently offline due to defects or for routine maintenance

Its going from bad to worse for the French at the moment another minor hit was the fact that Olkiluoto 3 in Finland has been postponed by a further two months due to necessary inspections and repairs to the cooling system of the unit's generator. At one time the EPR design was EDF's big plan to fill their coffers by selling the technology globally - to date not one of their EPR's outside of China has been built on schedule, to budget or worked consistently, subsequently their plans to replace their own fleet of aging reactors hasnt had the funding and now they are starting to see age related issues.

The idea that Macron thinks he will get the fleet an extension to their operational licence has to be one of the most optimistic hopes of recent times that or else he is blatantly misleading his country in expectations which in itself is a dangerous pastime for many politicians in many parties and across numerous countries

In a French parliamentary hearing, Bernard Doroszczuk noted that while the French energy firm had investigated 35 weldings for corrosion, and would check a further 105 by the end of June, the EDF is still unsure about what the cause of the problem is.
Corrosion problems in the reactors have been gaining speed, however, he believed that at this stage, it is unlikely that the age of reactors have caused this damage.
He added that EDF’s 32 900MW reactors, which constitute a bulk of France’s reactors, were largely unaffected by the problems from the corrosion.

Authorities believe that one possible cause for the problems could be the “frenchifying of the design” of 900 MW reactors originally based on a Westinghouse design.
