"The solar project will provide energy for Nissan’s Sunderland facility, totalling 20% of the plant’s energy needs. According to the company, this is enough to build every Nissan LEAF electric vehicle sold in Europe, according to the company. "

looks like prime agricultural land to me...
Just because it's for (some) electric cars doesn't mean anything goes.

Keeps the company viable instead of closing and moving out the Uk.

It's on land within Nissan's industrial site, I believe the road around the current panels was / is a test track. There already a number of second hand wind turbines on site, rescued from Denmark if my memory serves me correctly.

AE, you know this is also a bugbear of mine too, re-designation of farming land is a constant in the UK (building black tarmac , tree-less heat island housing of low standard.

Every park & ride system featuring diesel buses (usually council owner land) on the edges of cities needs to think 10 years ahead NOW, & "solar CAR park" the lot
An ev, that has air con is one thing, an e.g. That is sitting parked up burning electrons due to "cabin overheat protection" kicking in at 40c is another entirely & horribly wasteful, (lots of this will happen in non tree lined areas ((sheffield)) ..creating problems for on street parking (which I resent when it screws up the passage of vehicles) & a new form of noise pollution pofentially.

Councils need to measure heat island effect on exposed car parks in relation to the immediate environment & curtail it wherever possible, considering the tracts of land purchased by big supermarkets the planning & implementation of solar with minimal shadowing should be quite easy.

Agri voltaics for fields, too much redesignated agri land is lost to housing as is.
Grazing should be the bare minimum requirement around & under a variety of cattle type classifications.

Nissan finished product car storage ought be solar too, not merely a field next door, the cooling benefits are there to be seen & felt, & if need be air moved from it via mechanical means.

Incidentally, how do Nissan heat their factories? ..would it be gas blowers, or under the car park gshp? ..because you may as well ratchet down that footprint whilst you are at it.
