and about time too. It's nothing but an ego-trip for local authority bigwigs. Ditto Leeds-Bradford and loads of others, probably including Bristol. They are in the wrong places, have no worthwhile public transport and simply encourage wasteful air travel with a superficial appearance of convenience.
I totally disagree with the Beeb's "Spencer Stokes, business correspondent, BBC Yorkshire" who says
One of the largest urban conurbations in the country is left without an airport.
Most "urban conurbations" don't need an airport, full stop.

But, does this mean even more fossil fuel for the Londoncentric airports & economy, money going down to London economy (& All the arguments they make for business they bring in? (whether you are forced to use London or not)
Nope, I've never used em, & we have London planes expanded holding flight pattern upon us now (countryside)
NB the airports squished the sky for that 96 year olds funeral ..but the rest of the time they give not one toss!
(The most uncomfortable nights kip I've likely ever had bar fevered sleep was in ealing, under the flight path)
What are the options on the land, naff housing?

no, because there are big international airports at Manchester and Glasgow - and Brum, mostly well-served by electric trains, plus lots (too many) other middle-tier regional airports.

Sewage works, reservoirs, pv (or both), return to agriculture, if they really are in a conurbation then plan (surface) transport and housing with all the rest of the things that a town needs, like employment, schools etc. Basically could be New Towns without taking farmland like MK did.

There was a sand and gravel quarry next door so maybe more value in digging a large hole - a bit like Doni Council when they bought into the place in the first instance!
Likelihood is though it will be a large housing estate and shopping zone just like all the other closed air bases except of course for Lindholme - that one got turned in to an HM Prison.
Hmmm maybe thats the solution ?????

Seems good for a ground-breaking solar, heatpumps, & ashp coils for commercial aspects to bring the North up to speed in terms of the fabled net zero.
However unlikely, such as reality really is.
