Greek National Grid ran entirely on renewables

I'm not sure the figures in the article can be correct, but

"On Friday (7 October), for a period of around five hours, the country was running off entirely renewable power, reaching a record high of 3,106MWh at eight o’clock (GMT).

“For the first time in the history of the Greek electricity system, the demand was covered 100% from renewable energy sources,” its IPTO wrote."

Written in a slightly different way here, I suspect they did have some FF spinning reserve generation running, but they may have been exporting some so were in a net zero position.

https://www.ekathimerini.com/economy/11 ... on-friday/

"Greece managed to cover 100% of national demand for electricity using only renewables for a period of five hours last week, for the first time in the history of the Greek electricity grid, the Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE) announced on Monday.

According to figures released by ADMIE, production from renewables reached a new historic high (3,106 MW), exceeding the system’s net charge capacity, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on October 7."

I'm struggling with the idea that the whole country only needed 3GW of power during that time period??

Same here. Checking population it's about 1/6th the UK, so call it 18GW, v's about 30GW+ for the UK at midday.

Maybe, and I'm just guessing here, there's a lot of demand side PV, wind etc?

Warmer climate, less heating required, plus a lower standard of living (or less expensive lifestyle!) than the UK perhaps? GDP per capita is less than half that of the UK.

1/6th of 30GW is 6GW, I can believe that they actually used half that. Then again, the article says they have 10GW of renewable capacity. Obviously it can't all be online at the same time. Who knows?

Edit: maths fail - 1/6 of 30 is 5 :)

Good points, so 5 or 6GW, sitting pretty with Nowty's graphic, good call.

It looks like this RE lark is going to work.

……plus the fact that a lot of Greeks have a passive hot-water heating system (toobs) on the roof.

Another chance for promoting toobs in europe wasted when we need to conserve / utilise renewables, ..but thats european politicians for you.
