Like him or not I found the first of the above series a compelling watch wtih the demolition of a coal fired power station and a look at Drax with conflicting views on it's renewable credentials.
The next instalment investigates wind power, so will be interesting to see how the programme presents it!

I've also just watched the first episode and it was interesting to get to see in places that you never would be able to otherwise.

Guy Martin? I've honestly not seen anything of his in a sit down & watch scenario due to him arriving on "slot in presenter" tv doc style that prevails today, by 2011 when he arrived on the scene, i'd long had enough of crap tv in general so never paid any heed to his output.
Looking through his wikipedia tv page, hackneyed tv 5h1te, if you really want to learn about a lancaster bomber / spitfire read some books, not the regurgitated crap that ticks boxes for tv to the detriment of a quality programme.
Where does it sit on a scale of "one show" to ten?

It was the topic as much as the presenter that drew my attention to it and given that probably 90% of the population take energy generation and supply for granted while not having a clue how it all functions then I'm just relieved to see the topic given any air time at all. As a motorcyclist I naturally have a healthy respect for Guy who achieved so much during his riding career.
His shed and the various forms of energy and heat generation he had to hand, Diesel generator, Wood burner, waste oil heater along with a heat pump to give us a taste of what might be given more attention as the series progresses. I'm intrigued to learn what slant might be put upon each given the current energy crisis.
A couple of snippets I picked up being that there are only one hundred linesman qualified in the UK to complete all maintenance and installation work upon the grid so perhaps just one reason why it may be so difficult to arrange connection to it. Working at the heights they are it was pleasantly surprising to learn there has never been a fatality of anyone engaged in the work.
So while maybe not of interest to those in the "know" it is likely to appeal to those of us who still feel we have something to learn.

Are you sure the 100 linesmen were for the whole grid, I thought that they were for the very high voltage lines, but I wasn't paying full attention

Can't be 100 for the whole grid?? twas one of the riskier jobs to do (fallen arches, cancers & increased electrocution on those pylons than anywhere else in the system ..unless I've got the definition wrong!? ..my mate was being pushed to do that as a trainee back in the day of Eastern Electricity (proper training)
OVERHEAD linesman, how many different types are there?

I wouldn't "lump" Guy Martin in with the usual rubbish docusoaps . I don't watch much on TV but I always watch his stuff. He gets his hands dirty and truly tries to understand the subject. His one on EV's was frank and fair in my opinion. And he has done far more than just play around with Lancasters and Spitfires - and I don't think you could get everything he conveyed about the Spitfire from a book - besides a couple of hour programmes takes less time than reading a book

Ah it was an example, but I take the point(s) of differing quality of both programme & presenters, so may investigate (& eat some words, ..not the alphabetti spaghetti kind) ..just they do pump copious amounts of mulch programming.
I'd have coronary'ed on the spot if they'd given it to that bloody stacey solomon "stacey" does.....

Hi CP, you may well be right as Guy was high up on one of those monster pylons at the time. The view looking down from where he was perched made me giddy, and that while in the comfort of my own armchair.

I found the first two interesting. Not dumbed down too much like most modern programs. Only thing I hate is 4 on demand is useless. We have a bad Internet speed and it spools all the time and then often restarts from the beginning. Most other on demand services work ok but not 4. I don't think they reduce the picture quality to match the available bandwidth.
