Is this the arrival of room-temperature superconductors?

Any news worthy story. Good things to watch at the Cinema, Theatre, on TV or have you read a good book lately?

Is this the arrival of room-temperature superconductors?

New research paper published this week claiming a breakthrough of a room-temperature and ambient pressure superconductor.
Although almost zero information in the paper so could just be hot air.

Irrespective of the authenticity of the report, the search is on for one, including a claim earlier this year which was reported a couple of times in the New York times. Needs a lot of pressure applied though.

It needs to be compressed to a pressure of 145,000 pounds per square inch before it gains its superconducting prowess.

And this an article about the one dan_b posted, which alleges not to require the high pressure.

I always felt room temperature superconductors were the electrical equivalent of nuclear fusion - ie it's always 20 years away, but they are the holy grail. And would have huge implications in energy generation and transmission

Over on Twitter, a superconducting magnet engineer has posted a thread about this and it's interesting reading

This is both simple and important enough it'll be replicated (or not) by a bunch of different people within a few weeks.

I've read both the original and the new paper.

I'm surprised at that it isn't more refined - it's probably indicative of some beef up and people rushing to publish.

The evidence of superconducting material isn't really that important, that's easy to test. This particular material itself will have limited application (critical field and critical current seem very low.)

I'm sure several places are cooking some now. Hopefully they replicate.

The groundbreaking and definitely Nobel award level point is that the reason WHY this has occured is not fully explained and is a much bigger and more valuable question and could potentially spawn alot more research and several very very very impactful materials.

Maybe one or a few more tweaks and ta-ga, it will give high J_c and B_c.
