Here in the UK of all places.

A 1GW (1040MW/2080MWh) battery system - wonder if that will be Tesla Megapacks?

Website news of the development from Carlton Power.

They have the planning permission but I don't believe they have secured the funding yet.

Good spot. Although I reckon having planning in place will mean the money will quickly follow?

Probably, but maybe not all at once as they are selling it in 250MWh blocks which I think would still be the largest battery system in the UK. I think there are a couple of 100MW / 200MWh ones either built or under construction.

Good for the future though re-powering the decommissioned coal stations and re-using the grid access point infrastructure.

I know we aren't starting from zero with grid scale battery storage, but if we were, then 20 projects like this would provide the storage power estimated to be needed by 2030 for a 100% low carbon grid. The estimated power figure grows from 20GW to about 50GW by 2050.

Obviously the energy side is much different, and will require larger/longer scale energy storage, but that's fun to watch too, such as the CAES project being developed in the Netherlands at 280MW/26,880MWh (84hrs).

The current world largest battery storage site has never operated at full capacity after various fires and sprinkler incidents.

No investigation complete yet either.

Just because you have permission doesn't mean magic new technology is ready or that you can even source the material you need.

100% low carbon grid via storage estimates are made on some.... hilariously.... generous capacity factors too, compounded by that goal only getting harder the more you closer you get to it.

The grid connection has already been re-used: they replaced the 240MW coal station with an 884MW CCGT. The space is available though, and reinforcing an existing supergrid connection is much easier than building a new one.
