The financial cost of the Grenfell Tower disaster has reached nearly £1.2bn – 4,000 times the amount that was saved by replacing fire-retardant cladding with a cheaper combustible alternative during the disastrous refurbishment.
The bulk of the cost is being met from the public purse, dwarfing the compensation to bereaved and survivors paid by companies involved in wrapping the west London council’s block in combustible materials before the fire in June 2017 that killed 72 people.
The £1.17bn known to have been spent or allocated so far is enough to fund more than 10,000 new social homes. The figure is certain to be an underestimate because several organisations involved in the disaster have not disclosed their costs.

The more it costs the better as far as I'm concerned! It'll make organisations think twice before trying to save a few pennies here and there at the expense of safety.
For me the real lesson is that safety doesn't occur in ringbinders packed full of thousands of pages of documentation. That is just a pointless job-creation exercise. Safety occurs in the real world! Literally dozens of council employees signed off on a project that at it's very core involved covering a building that had a single central staircase with combustable cladding. Thus entirely defeating the original design that relied on it being functionally impossible for fire to spread from one section of the building to another. Every single one of these employees did their paperwork but not one of them took real-world action to keep the residents safe and not one of them has gone to prison for it.

(Artist formally known as ******, well it should be obvious enough to those for whom such things are important.)

Well said . I would also have included HMG as a culpable body, too.

Totally with you.
"cost saving shortcuts" cost us all WAY more than doing it properly.
You can bet your boots nothing has been learnt nor actions taken due to the ongoing pressure of inward migration in all its forms!
& the govt now asking us again to take more people into our own homes for chump change in this climate, can go screw themselves, SO out of touch.
(wonder how they feel about selling off all those forces bases to offshore companies now)
