Remarkable picture at the end of an article in today's graun, https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/ ... cellations (Mount Etna eruption leads to flight cancellations at Sicily’s Catania airport,
Catania’s mayor has banned the use of motorcycles and bikes while many streets in the city remain covered by ash as a result of the erupting volcano)

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, but I am!

Nice to see standards are being maintained:
The eruption was singaled last week when Etna emitted gas rings
:D

Without context I'm left guessing as to why motorcycles have been banned...

Is it breathing in particles that a car better filters?
is it ash on streets = loss of grip & stability for 2 wheelers?

or what? :ugeek:

Catania mayor Enrico Trantino banned the use of motorcycles and bicycles in the city for 48 hours – because many streets were covered in ash – and ordered cars to drive no faster than 30kph (19mph). The ash can quickly become slippery on roads and increase the risk of accidents.

I must admit I don't quite understand why cars are allowed and motorcycles / bicycles are banned. If its slippy, its slippy for all. ?

because (if you go slowly enough) on 4 wheels you always stay upright no matter how slippery it is? Which is definitely not the case on 2 wheels!

That's just plain Wheelist that is.
Out of control cars are preferable then!? surely not.

Statements need to be carefully contstructed & issued so everyone gets the reasoning & increased compliance rather than left in the dark.

Is it slick, does it drag, what speed does anything tend to lose traction at etc... like a bad weather warning or stating help out A&E "seasonal pressures" type warnings issued, by applying common sense & caution IF you really must venture out which we cannot recommend...blah blah.
