I was interested by the 'rule' that only 75% of leccy can come from RE, rising to 95% by 2030.

Not knocking it, clearly Ireland has its plans, and is linking RE gen to grid updates, but certainly a different approach. I assume it helps being connected to the UK, and we in turn, with the ever growing capacity to mainland Europe.

A similar rule to the 75% seems to be followed by the Nat Grid as i often see the wind being curtailed overnight to a output of 12-13GW. That fig would seem to come from demand less inflexible nuclear less spinning reserve = demand avialable for RE tempered by transmission capacity.

With the last 25% we are now getting to the nitty gritty of how to maintain grid stability and supply insurance against a failure of transmission or production.

Speaking of which Ken, just noticed on the nat grid live site, that renewables (wind, solar and hydro) are at 73%. The figure's been rising with solar gen, on this nice day. I assume that the PV will peak in half an hour (or so).

Good. Where are you seeing that fig of 73% I presume it is estimating non metered wind as Gridwatch is way below that.

Hi Ken here's that site, but it's starting to decline now, currently 70.4%, as we have passed solar noon (1pm BST).

£-49.77/MWh at present, must be the bright thing in the sky causing mayhem again! I'm certainly having a good generation day here on the shiny North West Wales coast.

Tea time demand has bumped it to £121 /MWh now, but I'm doing my bit still on Batteries and solar even though the boss has the tumble dryer going.

I cant help but feel the 75% is a political thing, much like the taxes on RE instead of fossil to drive through RE take up.

As I understand it, the National Grid are requiring adequate spinning generation to enable restarts after any unfortunate black-outs.

That figure was a minimum of 3.5GW from gas generation but reducing as time goes on (hoping to be able to maintain the grid, without gas generation (at all times), by 2025. Grid management is an extremely complex affair and they cannot afford to cut things, like this, too fine before they have installed the means of a grid restart without gas-fired generators running.
