Some good ideas in here around moving some of the levies from the electricity bill to the gas bill.

I've been a very vocal supporter of a having a negative standing charge and higher unit rate. This would benefit the frugal and encourage those who consume the most to use less.

I also am very supportive of the democritisation of energy that comes from rooftop solar. Most UK houses have a roof capable of providing all the energy the house consumes. A grid connection is needed because the times of year when solar generates the most energy (summer) does not coincide with the times of year when the house consumes the most energy (winter). However the "net metering" of a typical home should be zero and bills shoud refelct this!

Unfortunately, at the present time (and probably forever) we do not have the ability to store for half a year that amount of energy (the excess summer production). You are looking at something like 50 EV car batteries/house -- I don't mean AT the house, but somewhere.

I don't think anybody here would advocate trying to do that. That is what wind turbines and the grid are for in my opinion, plus the interconnectors to places like Norway with lots of HEP, Maybe even to Iceland and Morocco one day.

You’ve missed the point!

A house can use the grid as a battery!
