Given that traffic is a problem, full stop, and that lots of people can't drive or won't ever own an electric car - especially with the cost of houses being beyond the reach of many nowadays - I would have been more impressed if the policy announcement had been that all houses had to have rooftop pv and battery storage.

+1 for all new-builds having rooftop solar and batteries. I've suggested before that 1kWp and 2.4kWh per bedroom is a suitable amount to require. I'd also suggest that all new-builds should come with an independently-measured air-tightness reading with a minimum-acceptable-value having been defined.

I think probably a better solution would be for new builds to have the proper cabling in place for EV charge point provision, but that it's still up to the owner to choose to install an EV charge point as and when they need it, and be able to choose the one they want (e.g. Zappi, or one provided by the car manufacturer). As probably what will happen is the developers will mass purchase the cheapest and worst units available, they'll probably mostly go unused for several years and then break.

Dan, I think your right.
Imagine if this was law 10yrs ago we would have ChadeMO chargers or type 1 -completely useless now except for a few.

Although I sort of agree, depending on the charger you install, you might need an earth rod or a type A circuit breaker, and DNO notification so its not as simple as you might think.

Yes, it may mean all new housing will require a supply which will be relevant to an all-electric society in a few years time.
A 7kW charger soaks up more than 30A. Some houses will likely have 2 electric vehicles? It also means that all houses will need off-road parking spaces? It needs a bit of joined-up thinking on someone’s part.

That's the part that interested me. We have a new exhibition centre here on the edge of Aberdeen. Completed just before Covid hit. Guess how many EV charge points?....10 in a 15,000 person site.
I applaud any laws that prevent body serves like this.
