EDF had hoped to re-start the reactor and run it for another 8 years, but instead it'll be decommissioned having been shut down in 2018.

I know nuclear generation is a very expensive and difficult topic, but this must surely mean the UK ends up burning more fossil fuels for the next 7 years, especially considering Hinkley C is still many years away from start-up?

Interesting thought - Dungeness (well, Lydd), was the site for the first HVDC interconnection between the UK and France back in the 60s. I guess they could make use of the nuclear grid connection to build another one - although I don't believe there are currently plans for one to land there - the other French HVDCs in planning are intended to make landfall in Kent will be at Kingsnorth and the Isle of Grain . Perhaps that may change.

I grew up in a village a few miles SW of Sandwich over on the East coast of Kent - remember visiting places like Lydd, Sellinge, Romney,, Hythe, Dymchurch etc.

The power station at Richborough, and then later, the prototype on-shore wind turbine, were hugely visible landmarks for miles around - all rather flat in East Kent as it runs into the sea.

We lived quite close to the top secret nuclear strike early warning radar station in Ash, which used to interfere with certain electronics I recall! Decommissioned now and turned into an underground high security data vault.

I've got an investment via Abundance in the nearby Hoo Solar farm, there's not much else out there and I know the farmers are really struggling now.
