Should we entertain this?
They moved so many elements of government out elsewhere in WW2 what is the problem with doing it over again?
This is the latest "best case scenario" (i'm not going to go there with the worst case cost estimates)
"The cheapest plan involved a full decant of the Palace of Westminster, for between 12 and 20 years, with the work costing in the region of £7bn to £13bn.
With MPs elsewhere for much of the time, the report estimated the works would take between 19 and 28 years"
& the other questions
A. is it worth retaining at that price (so much else is left / demolished at govt hands on basis of "no longer fit for function" or prohibitively expensive?
B. what better could we do with the money.
C. how much is that per adult to pay?
D. your thoughts on 1 billion being spent on windfarms to sell energy & cull the profits for this sort of purpose until its done!
E. where should "temporary parliment" be & how frugal? ..well we used to have years of bloody cold mobile classrooms at my school that were deemed satisfactory! ..god knows we shouldn't spec a useless millenium dome that we flog off cheap to an american company afterwards & lots of land with it.

Re: Westminister repairs cost & time
We need a seat of National Government.
But what we have isn't fit for purpose.
By all means renovate the Palace of Westminster but keep it as a tourist/heritage attraction.
Meantime, build a new Parliament somewhere else. Preferably outside of London.
Re-design the chamber so that it is no longer adversarial Government vs Opposition Benches.
Re-work Parliamentary processes to that digital voting is brought in and continue to allow remote debate participation.
Finally, make it a Campus parliament. So that when MPs are attending Parliament, they can do so, but in basic B&B accommodation provided as part of their package. That means no ridiculous privilege, no need/ability/requirement to own a second home in London, no ability to then cheat the system for expenses. MPs come to London to work in Parliament. Then they return to their Constituencies.

Sadly a Japanese capsule hotel wouldn't likely be allowed in the uk (wheelchair access etc, I wonder how they deal with those regs in japan)
But seriously something that gets them off the streets ..looking at you Kieth Vaz (Lab) Mark Oaten (Lib dem) Mark Menzies (Con) etc
Something no better than a travel lodge but no worse, it's what others deal with regularly so why not!?
A single bar & restaurant ala Wetherspoons, again ..enough for many, so why not them? conforming to regular hours & prices not "special privilege" (unless its a camra voucher)
&, MP pay rise votes to be taken away from them & tied to that of the NHS & Teachers, so if they offer a 3% pay rise to nurses that's what the politicos get too, none of what we currently endure, sickeningly.
None of these to be built run or operated by bloody Serco in any shape or form.
No "build now pay it off 75 years later hospital / school schemes"
As for location, somewhere with A road Access, mid-lands preferably a pre-wired location like RAF Wittering, the defunct side of Alconbury air base or similar (RAF wyton & some surrounding fields, RAF Molesworth etc) East Midlands but still with access, & a runway if needed
Plenty of Hangars to utilise for the ollocks that is the parlimentary benches (Mart is right, that needs to go, ..de-claw the seating heirachy
If we are going to swallow billions in tax for that building then cut your cloth where your temporary base is, ..I think a lot of the ex forces would appreciate that ..barracks for unmarried MP's & staff maybe?
They can catch a train from Peterborough having travelled by car there if they want to travel south back to the smoke, & first class not allowed unless out of their own pocket, stops at Peterborough are not overly frequent as it is an overlooked outdated station so they might have to wait a while for a fast train that go's direct.
I have not seen the cost of "temporary parlimentary estates" so feel that is a bombshell yet to be dropped, but seeing as they all feel so threatened by the public stick em behind the wire "for their own safety" like Oakington barracks was repurposed for asylum seekers.
lots of room for thin walled damp smelling school mobiles for their back stabby meetings.
Frugal, not mean.
