Green (veg) waste bin collections.

Somewhat miffed.

Our green waste bin (for which when our daughter was tiny we first started on the then very expensive comfortable caddy have (so high on 18 yrs back) has been fine for collection until the other day "refused" ..so I started looking around other councils here & round the world for a cross sample.

Looks like the "turnaround" before it's flogged onto landscapers is 6-10 day modelling from waste to "not really soil" saleable commodity.
Of which the have we buy ( With the correct markings, not cheap either) are deemed unsuitable for the composting facility.

Newspaper as a wrapped is fine (no paper delivered here for some years) ..so that's out.

Paper bags, but not the thick kind, ..if it supports shopping that's too thick ..so that's out. (So none of your coffee shop stops, or too good to go in an m&s paper bag)

Which leaves us with very little option then, doubtless I will run into a problem when calling not very efficient, nor bright, definitely not capable council spots masquerading as customer service.

Thing is, the bags we use degrade fast, within 4 days they are sloppy & tearing, so "slopped out" ..that's a fast degradation imho, ..does this mean the council failed to specify r even understand the composting variables within the area when picking cheapest services?

First time I've felt like saying "enough" & chucking it in household waste ( we only fill a handful bins per years 6 weeks is regular, just to keep it from festering too much, decent amounts of shredded card in there too!

Not seen any paper caddy bags available to date, ..in fact supermarkets here have only really started selling (25p) paper carriers which we don't need, & are wrong as well.

I thought you'd compost the lot for yourselves Gus? We do the lot and any excess paper goes to WBS's in one form or the other. Nothing better than growing tatties in bags for the Winter on last years insect processed leaving.

I do a bit of container gardening. Looking forward to getting home to turn out the tatties and strew the depleted compost across the lasagna beds.

There are two simple ways to deal with green waste. Either compost it or, if not much, start a wormery. End of a problem that does not arise or exist.

I have a wormery, ..two actually, however we still produce more than those could absorb, this overflow requirements.

That & in the countryside fields & ditches, plus bird feeder obsessed neighbours, .. "RATS" this compost heap is a no.

I have three, nope four composters (maybe 1,200 ltrs)? and tbh I've not seen any droppings or gnaw marks at all. We did have a single ratty fellow show up chasing our neighbours birdtable drops but were dispatched with alarcity. Interested in the compost from the wormery? Is it fine, like worm castings?

Gus, we’re semi rural with plenty of four legged wildlife. Keep three Dalek compost bins going with garden and kitchen waste - although nothing cooked or meat/bone based.

Plenty of quality compost, never a prob with rats (touch wood) or Badgers (which we have a plenty) or, similarly, foxes.

Only ‘wildlife’ invading the bins - brandlings. We also see Slow Worms - which are very frequent in the garden.

Sure you could compost without Rat probs.

Wife will not stand for a regular composter based on vermin encouragement, field harvested yesterday, mouse caught today & despatched in the freezer (had mousetrap fail that trapped it & just it's foreleg / shoulder) into a box & the carbon freezing chamber for a permaslumber
