Approx 200 Stuttgarter onion sets have gone shoulder to shoulder in a tray of damp compost, in the greenhouse, to develop early roots. In a couple of weeks they will go in a raised bed outside and protected from Mr Blackbird by mesh frames. He looks for worms by lifting them.

I’ve bought the seed potatoes, Kind Edward and Maris Peer but have to wait until April to plant out. I’ll be doing the same as last year and just laying them on the surface before covering with compost.

Loads of shops are selling fruit trees and I had a pair of victoria plums. They are in the ground now and staked.

Garlic overwintered in the raised beds.
Potatoes have been chitting for a while and coming along nicely.
Trying 2 new varieties this year.
Epicure- scottish first early
Nemo. Bought some spuds from tesco over xmas and they were excellent, so kept some back. Supposedly bred to be an all rounder, with good blight and drought resistance and heavy cropping. Certainly taste good but theyve been bred to be "faster to cook" apparently. The first eco potato?!

The next glut of seeds for the next few years (i buy like i am awaiting armageddon) arrived in the post today.
Conservatory aka greenhouse staging area is full of insulation at present for the underfloor project.
Cant start the seeds until its under the floor, and have 4 ton of topsoil to move from the drive to fill up the next lot of raised beds that have been built before spring.

Some of the early onions from seed are up and growing, now in the greenhouse - for some reason the red ones are doing much better than the brown ones this year, I've just planted a 2nd set of brown ones, along with a few spring onions.
Spuds are chitting.
Broad beans are up, chillis & sweet peppers are planted but not growing yet, along with aubergines and okra for the first time.
Got a few salady things going, and spinach, kale, broccoli, cauliflower planted (all in trays on an indoors windowsill, and the chillis etc in a little heated propagator).
I planted some cosmos flower seeds at the same time as the chillis and they have shot up in around 48 hours!!

I'll plant tomatoes in a couple of weeks - they always catch up with the chillis as they seem to grow much quicker

Your broad bean disaster ...... for trays set outdoors, try a "box" made of "hardware cloth" (I don't know what you call it over there) zinc coated steel mesh with opening abut 1/4". Cut a piece several inches larger than your trays, cut one side of each corner, and fold into a box structure. I use when fall planting nuts in buried "Steue pots" else the mice and voles would get them.

Tomatoes are coming on well (mostly) - got 6 varieties on the go - Sungold are our favourite sweet little ones, also trying Indigo Cherry this year.
Tigerella and Cristal are the 2 normal sized ones, then Marmande and Alta Albenga for beef steak size.
I always end up with more than I need, although the Sungold are being slightly reluctant this year. had to sow a 2nd batch
