Starting Growing - Tomatoes etc
Re: Starting Growing - Tomatoes etc
With thousands of varieties of tomato it is no surprise that they describe some as sweet / super sweet.
It is nice to eat simple sugars in veg form though & knock other stuff back (the really processed schmutter) ..also, & the reason for saying sweet, is my daughter loved toms as a kid (ate them every meal) but when she hit puberty & we found out she'd got a rogue gene causing problems some tomatoes were a pain aggravator, she seems to be able to eat insipid steak tomatoes still though, but as not home she is not going to be tempted to indulge in the bad fruits, & I can scoff without guilt, ,,damned if I'm growing tasteless bloated steak-matoes.

I'm not (yet) aware of super-sweet tomatoes... deliberately bred for higher sugar. Swedes and carrots, yes, and you can taste it when you cook & eat them.Mr Gus wrote: ↑Sun Feb 26, 2023 8:59 pm With thousands of varieties of tomato it is no surprise that they describe some as sweet / super sweet.

Lots of old heirloom tomato varieties out there though, dating back at least to the '50s - before getting animal fat out of they diet was seen as important so before they put in (bred in) sugar and put starch and High-Fructose corn syrup into made-dishes instead.

Re: Starting Growing - Tomatoes etc
We tried loads last year - small ones, gert big ones, tiger, plum, red, yellow, purple etc (don’t ask me names).
Loved them all - the little patio ones are great value as they’re pretty much plant, forget, harvest.
The absolute best ones, though, in-terms of crop, taste, texture were Alicante, which I know are an older variety as I remember my Dad growing them before I was in double figures - I’d say at least 60 years ago.

Alicante, we used to grow hundreds of trays from seed, in our glasshouses, it is burned onto my retinas writing up tickets for the trays as a kid.
I was somewhat obsessive with pricking out, really getting in the zone, despite being forced to listen to dross on radio cambridgeshire.
All the toms were given away (just not to me)
And I never got to try any!! raw deal.
Millions rings a bell too.
