We saw an experimental set-up in the Canaries about 20 years ago, it looked a bit tatty so I don't know how robust they are. It was a long sheet of fine mesh hung verticallly with a gutter slung below the bottom edge.

Considering they drop moisture down to a sump, I'm pretty sure that it's got to be a fairly heavy gauge tarp to deal with heat & wind in order to drop the moisture correctly.
It may be messy / industrial, but once a self shading grove is established that's got some more potential doing it via its own shade & limb structure maybe at that stage they try to leave a smaller green canopy to blend & carry on contributing, who knows what will have to be jerry-rigged to claw back nature in future.
